Currently, all downloads are managed through either yt-dlp or ffmpeg.

Allowing plugin devs to override the default download function and handle the process themselves could improve download speeds.

For example, in the case of the YouTube plugin using yt-dlp directly to download from the youtube url is faster than with ffmpeg. (see video).
