You can select inactive text fields, but it goes randomly between selecting the first character, the whole string, and the entire element. Also, you can select text in multiple text fields at once, which doesn't make sense. Furthermore, you can't copy things from inactive text fields, making selection pointless. Either the selection behavior should be improved and copying enabled, or selection on inactive text fields should be disabled.
