Docker Desktop - endless spinner on docker engine shutdown #14993

It seems my local docker desktop installation somehow got corrupted. Since I couldn't figure out the issue I tried removing docker desktop according to https://docs.docker.com/desktop/uninstall/
I've also removed the additional directories mentioned that weren't removed by the uninstaller. Then I went ahead and did a fresh docker desktop installation.
Installation went fine. Afterwards, I tried to enable the wsl2 integration for my wsl 2 distro in settings > resources > wsl integration
The default distro option was already enabled but that didn't work:
ls -l /var/run/docker.sock
ls: cannot access '/var/run/docker.sock': No such file or directory
At this point I selected my Ubuntu-24.04 wsl 2 distro specifically and after hitting "apply" docker desktop tries to shutdown the engine but never succeeds and the setting is never actually applied.
Next i tried updating wsl2 in a windows shell:
wsl --update
Checking for updates.
Updating Windows Subsystem for Linux to version: 2.6.2.
The issue remains.
Reproduce
- Fresh install of docker destop
- Enable wsl2 integration (this step is not strictly required, I've noticed I can't regularly shutdown/restart the docker engine at all)
- Experience endless spinner which can only be stopped by killing the docker desktop processes
Expected behavior
Docker engine shutdown works, settings are applied and docker is available within my wsl 2 distro.

I initially had docker installed within the wsl 2 distro but removed it before reinstalling docker desktop.
WSL2 version updated to 2.6.2
