Instead of having the having the italic a, g, y etc at once, selecting them separately is more useful. Another example is having the alternative characters(such as the straight l) be selected for regular, and the curved l be selected for italics.

I highly recommend checking out Iosevka configuration style, but for this font - only the select characters and nothing else.
