Description
Describe the bug
I am experiencing issues with HDR image compatibility in the Ente Photos app. Specifically, when I view HDR images that were created/edited in Adobe Lightroom, they do not appear to be recognized or rendered as HDR content within Ente Photos.
In contrast, the same files display the expected HDR brightness range and trigger the system's HDR mode when viewed in the device's standard Gallery app.
Note on Screenshots:
Because HDR is a hardware display feature, the image content itself might look identical in a standard screenshot file. To demonstrate the issue, I have activated "Show HDR/SDR ratio" in the Android Developer Options.
- Standard Gallery: The system indicator appears (or shows a high ratio), confirming the screen is in HDR mode.
- Ente Photos: The system indicator is missing (or shows an SDR ratio), confirming the screen is NOT in HDR mode.
To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
- Export an image from Adobe Lightroom using an HDR color space.
- I have confirmed this issue with HDR sRGB (Rec. 709).
- The issue also persists when using HDR P3.
- Upload this image to Ente Photos.
- Open the image in the Ente Photos mobile app.
- Observe that the HDR indicator/overlay is missing or the dynamic range is not rendered correctly compared to the native gallery.
Expected behavior
Ente Photos should recognize the file as an HDR image and trigger the display's HDR mode (visible via the system "HDR/SDR ratio" overlay), regardless of whether the color space is HDR sRGB (Rec. 709) or HDR P3.
