The Gallo-Italic variety spoken in Nicosia and Sperlinga #1095
Conversation

Thanks for this PR. I wonder whether it makes sense to single out Nicosia
and Sperlinga specifically and afaict the Galloitalian varieties are
closest to Lombard and should rather be placed there. I just did another PR
where Sicilian Galloitalian (as a whole) is added under Lombard and the
refs are added in hh.bib. Maybe this addressed the need of this PR

I have two concerns about placing Gallo-Italic varieties in Sicily under Lombard. First, Gallo-Italic arrived in Sicily with populations from Liguria and Southern Piemonte, not from Lombardia. Next, they arrived here around 1000 years ago (1061), and then it is reasonable to expect that Gallo-Italic languages of Sicily substantially differs from the original language. |

Did some closer reading of Trovato who is a indeed a bit sloppy when he
connects the dialects to Lombard. Afaict the most detailed comparison is by
Petracco Sicardi 1969 who points to Sassello in Liguria and Monferrato in S
Piemonte (i.e., midway between Turin and Genoa), like you say. So I'll move
the entry to Piemontese. I also agree that 1000 of separation (and contact
with Sicilian) should lead to loss of intelligibility, but this is so only
if they did not remain in contact with the homeland. I don't know if this
is the case, or if there is a statement of (un)intelligibility somewhere,
or even a cognate count. Do you happen to know? all the best, H

Currently I don't have this information. The only thing I can say is that "Gallo-Italic varieties of Sicily seem to be located at the highest levels of the borrowing hierarchy, showing a considerable amount of structural elements transferred by the donor languages." (here the chief donor language is Sicilian). I put the variety of Nicosia under GalloItalic since I believe that is, by now, the most conservative choice. |
Created the languoid and added references about The Gallo-Italic variety spoken in Nicosia and Sperlinga.
