changes before merging and pulling new usethis from gh

remove @importFrom fields and simply depend on ::

compiled after previous changes. also used styler to adapt code style.

updated some todos to be more long term

updated function code based on jennybc comments. tried to remove the conditional if else. had to keep some for checks but got rid of major one.
