As per the CSL 1.0.2 Specification, "Term content should not contain markup such as LaTeX or HTML. Superscripted Unicode characters can be used for superscripting."

This was confirmed in citation-style-language/locales#387: "The characters are normalized to superscript styled characters by the citation processor when output to a format that supports it."
