How to Create Funnels

Create page Funnels in Mouseflow to track the conversion rate of specific funnels on your website automatically

Updated over 6 months ago

Funnels help you track how visitors move through key steps on your website—like signing up, checking out, or viewing specific content. This guide walks you through the process of creating, editing, and interpreting a funnel in Mouseflow

Funnel Overview List

The Funnel overview list gives you quick access to all your existing funnels in one place.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Funnels are sorted by last modified date by default.

  • You can sort any column (Name, Date Modified, Conversion Step, Step Order, Conversion Rate) by clicking on the column headers.

  • To manage a funnel, use the icons on the right:

    • Edit – Click the pencil icon to make changes

    • Duplicate – Click the papers icon to copy the funnel

    • More Options – Click the three dots to delete the funnel or download it as a CSV file

💡Date tracking started on March 17, 2025. Funnels modified after this date will display a date; older Funnels won’t.

Step-by-Step: Create a Funnel

  1. Go to Funnels from the left-hand navigation menu.

  2. Click + Add New Funnel.

  3. Name your funnel (e.g., Sign-Up Flow).

  4. Add funnel steps:

    • Click inside the Page field.

    • Select from the list or enter the path name.

Page Rule Options

Choose how Mouseflow matches your URLs:

  • Equals — For exact matches (e.g., /pricing)

  • Starts with — For broader matching (e.g., /pricing includes /pricing-plans)

📝Wildcards (*) are no longer used. /order* becomes "starts with" /order.

💡Mouseflow captures just the pathname by default. You only need to include full URLs if Cross-Domain Integration is enabled.

Choose Funnel Order

Select your funnel logic:

  • Predefined Order — Users must follow the defined step sequence.

  • Any Order — Users can complete steps in any order.

💡 By default, funnels use Predefined Order, but you can change this.

Add More Steps

  • Click + Add Step to include more pages.

  • Minimum: 2 steps per funnel.

  • Drag to reorder steps if needed.

Click Save Funnel

Mouseflow will begin analyzing your sessions that match your funnel setup.

Funnel Report

After saving a funnel, Mouseflow provides a detailed report.

Conversion Insights

  • Conversion Rate — % of sessions completing all steps

  • Lost Conversions — # and % of drop-offs before final step

  • Largest Drop-off — Step with the highest drop count

Step-by-Step Breakdown

For each step, you’ll see:

  • Total sessions reaching the step

  • % who continued to the next step

  • % who dropped off at that step

Conversions Over Time

Toggle the section header of the Funnel report to display a graph that shows how your funnel is performing over time.

The graph includes:

  • Conversion Rate – Percentage of completions

  • Started Funnel – Total sessions that began the funnel

  • Converted – Sessions that completed all steps

Each metric can be toggled on or off using the legend, and the graph automatically adjusts to your selected date range, helping you identify trends, seasonality, or the impact of recent changes.

Metric Table

At the bottom, you’ll find a table that breaks down key metrics per step:

Metric

Description

Indicates how much friction users experienced on that step. A higher score can signal issues or confusion.

Engagement Time

The average time users were actively engaging with the step (e.g., scrolling, clicking).

Visit Time

The total time users spent on the page, including both active and passive time.

Metrics are shown separately for:

  • Continuers – users who moved on to the next step.

  • Drops – users who left the funnel at that step.

💡You can watch session replays for both drops and continuers by clicking the play icon on each step. Want to analyze the layout and behavior visually? Click the heatmap icon to see the corresponding heatmap for each step.

To dig deeper into a specific step, use the step filter dropdown above the metric table to filter the report by one or more steps.

When you hover over the funnel visualization, the corresponding drop-offs, continuers, or converted group is highlighted both in the chart and in the metric table below for each step. This makes it easier to focus on relevant data for a specific group across the funnel.
