well... nice attempt, but i dont think ur shader works the way u think it does. the game is definitely not 2 colors my computer told me so 🤖
another game attempted something a bit more successfull: https://radcharmander46.itch.io/temporal-trip
as for the gameplay itself, i thought it was pretty cool and interesting, not my cup of tea though 😈 but i respect the effort
It is 2 colours. I have checked it extensively. If your computer says otherwise, I would be interested to know what screen I have not checked if you have that information?
Maybe your computer is wrong? Or the loading screen that I could not influence more is counted?
I've already checked that other game out. I do the same thing, but with less flicker.
I feel as though this kind of palette trickery goes against the spirit of the jam. On 120hz monitor there really is no discernable difference between this and a multicolour palette. Disregarding that, unfortunately job simulator games are not for me.
All the information I had starting the jam was that this was OK.
I don't know what went wrong in your process but this is way beyond my readability tolerance
Seems engaging though, hope you'll come up with a smoother version soon (:
Bro, there are way too many colors here.
Technically not, as it is 2 per frame, but I wished I'd understood human visual perception better before I used a quarter of the jam time.
I like the aesthetic.
The dehumanizing nature of shoving the clipboard over peoples faces also was pretty impactful.
In concept this is pretty close to papers, please - however contrary to papers border patrol agent, it's pretty much impossible to relate to the job agent here. I think it would be nice to emphasize a little from their perspective as well.
Thanks for bearing with it. Papers Please is something I would enjoy.
I am limited in how much narrative I can show in-game, due to the laborious prep/render process and the flicker, particularly outside the main loop, being harsh. I learnt a lot about 1 bit, and temporal dithering is not the answer.
For a game this mechanically complex it would be good for the game to explain in-game how to play it. There seems to be an option for a tutorial in the menu but no way to access it. Also the temporal dithering, it is impressive but it makes the game really difficult to look at (and seizure inducing).
The temporal dithering is really tone downed from my original concept, and my predecessor, Lemon.
The tutorial pops up help in the bottom left.
I'm sorry you need a tutorial for the tutorial.
I just retried the game and there is no difference between having the tutorial on or off from what I can see.
The tutorial is on by default, until you close each and every one of its pop up boxes, in the bottom left.
Turning it off just increases the counter of boxes you have seen so no new ones can be shown.
I like the game concept, but I do wish there was an option to turn off the flickering as it made everything much harder to read. It also didn't line up well with the refresh rate of my monitor unfortunately. The gameplay itself was fun though, and I respect the dedication to the colour-switching bit
I doesn't line up with anyone's monitor; I've tried several. Unfortunately, by the time I'd a POC to test the art, I was too invested to consider redrawing all the art without temporal dithering. Thank you for respecting my commitment.
The actual game has far less flicker than the menus. I don't know why this, other than I started development with the game first, and bolted menus on later.
Yeah that's fair! I appreciate that the colour palette is fairly muted so my eyes did kinda get used to it after playing for a bit. Also really liked the sound effects, very classic jobcentre vibes
Amazing idea with switching palettes. But as others mentioned it is painfully hard to play and concentrate when your screen is flashing with different colors. I love the gameplay loop, though, did spend some time to figure everything out.
I feel like my prescription glasses just went up +1 this last week.
Thanks for staying the course.
I understand all technical commitment that was done to implement such color change framework - good job on that
But I would like to have additional option in the settings to disable such behavior so I can to play what game offers without additional disturbing.
IMHO: For the portolio and as an art entry(I haven't seen such games on steam) that's a very good project.
It's horrible, but I was too far in by the time I finalised the temporal dithering to have any options other than binning all the art, or switching to monochrome. I muted the palette, and that helped, in the game at least. The other screens flicker violently and were added later.
I think the disparity was due to the palette getting tuned for the existing art, once I saw the state the original palette (bold, contrasting) made of it. This was before I drew intermediate scenes/screens. I can't say they are all bad, but the game itself was tolerable to look at, for the length of a game.
I guess you can figure out what you wanted and finish as planned after the jam. Nothing horrible in my opinion. It's your version 1.0.0 , so you can make your versions 1.0.0 and 1.x.x later.
If I never have to play through these levels again it will be too soon. Thanks for the compliment.
This game was spasming color and should probably have a warning label on it. Also, the game would freeze after I earned something for the first day.
There is a continue "button" at the end of day screen.
I'm sorry you found the flickering unacceptable.
No need to apologize! I didn’t mean it in a harsh way, just that with all the color and flickering, a warning would be a good addition for those that may be sensitive to flashing and bright colors. And thank you for the clarification! In my case, the issue was a complete game freeze on day 2. Thank you for your reply regardless! OH AND I ALMOST FORGOT TO MENTION! The art was amazing! I really loved it, and I didn't want to just leave negative feedback :)
Oh also! I just checked again to make sure I was accurate, and I see you did add a warning on the page. I missed that, so my apologies!
