Clarity now includes two dedicated channels to help you track traffic from generative AI platforms.
AIPlatform: Captures sessions where users land on your site after clicking on a free, organic link within an AI platform's chat experience. For example, a standard ChatGPT response with a link to your site.
PaidAIPlatform: Captures sessions where users land on your site after clicking on a paid ad within an AI platform's chat experience. For example, a sponsored Nike ad within Copilot.
They are available as a channel group in the Channel tab of the Traffic card of your dashboard and enable you to:
- Measure the volume of AI-referred sessions
- Compare behavior between AI-referred users and other traffic sources
- Attribute conversions to AI-driven discovery
How does it work?
When a visitor arrives via a link provided by an AI platform, Clarity checks the referral source and classifies the session into one of two channels:
AIPlatform: if the link comes from an organic AI-generated response on an AI platform.
PaidAIPlatform: if the link comes from a paid ad shown within an AI platform.
This separation helps you distinguish between organic AI referrals and paid placements in AI experiences.
Supported AI sources
The following AI platforms are currently supported under both AIPlatform and PaidAIPlatform:
| AI Platform | Source |
|---|---|
| Anthropic | Claude |
| CoPilot | Microsoft CoPilot |
| Gemini | |
| OpenAI | ChatGPT |
| Perplexity AI | Perplexity search |
Note
The numbers reflect direct use of Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and ChatGPT on their standalone websites (e.g., copilot.microsoft.com, chatgpt.com). AI features embedded in other products—like search engines or office tools—are not included.
Use cases
Some common use cases for the AI platform include:
Attribution: Tracking how many sessions and conversions are driven by AI recommendations.
UX analysis: Identifying how AI-referred users navigate your site.
Segmentation: Creating audience segments for AI traffic to run targeted studies or experiments.
Where to view AI traffic?
Sign in to Clarity. Go to your project dashboard.
Go to the Referrer card.
Switch to Channels tab. Look for the AIPlatform and PaidAIPlatform category in the list.
As you select the group, you can:
- filter by AIPlatform or PaidAIPlatform traffic
- compare engagement metrics against other channels
- view related recordings and heatmaps
- download data for further analysis
- view the specific channel trend line
You can also add AI-related segments to your Watchlist for easier tracking and quick access.
Limitations
AI sources are identified based on known referral patterns. If the source is hidden, the traffic might appear as Direct.
Only direct visits from standalone AI platforms are counted. AI features embedded in search engines or productivity tools aren't included.
- Data before this feature's release isn't reclassified.
