An excellent noir about merchant marines who come ashore in London for a few days and get themselves into unexpected trouble. Full of working class empathy and even sensitivity to race relations. Nevertheless, director Basil Dearden still manages to sidestep any cheap moral triumphs on his way to delivering a humanity affirming but still completely authentic ending. Superb.
