Chronic kidney disease in dogs and cats

Participating journal: BMC Veterinary Research

BMC Veterinary Research is calling for submissions to our Collection on Chronic kidney disease in dogs and cats.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition in companion animals, characterized by a decline in renal function. Advancements in understanding CKD have led to improved diagnostic tools, nutritional management strategies, and novel therapies like dialysis and palliative care. Advancements in tailored approaches to diagnosis and management are crucial due to the varying pathophysiology across species.

Advancements in the understanding of chronic kidney disease have led to improved diagnostic tools, including the identification of renal biomarkers and the exploration of genetic predispositions to CKD. Additionally, nutritional management strategies have evolved, offering better support for affected animals. The development of novel therapies, such as dialysis and palliative care approaches, aims to enhance the quality of life for animals suffering from renal insufficiency. We invite submissions of original research articles, that explores topics including, but not limited to:

Risk factors of CKD

Early detection of CKD

Innovations in genetic testing and biomarker identification

Advances in diagnostic technologies for the detection of renal insufficiency

Pathophysiology and disease progression of CKD

Enhanced understanding of the gut-kidney axis in CKD

Nutritional management and therapeutic diets for CKD prevention and management

Fluid and hydration therapy for the prevention and management of CKD

Integration of precision medicine approaches tailored to individual patients

Owner education and quality of life assessments for animals with CKD

All manuscripts submitted to this journal, including those submitted to collections and special issues, are assessed in line with our editorial policies and the journal’s peer review process. Reviewers and editors are required to declare competing interests and can be excluded from the peer review process if a competing interest exists.

  • Natalie Finch PhD, University of Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom

Dr Finch graduated from the University of Liverpool then completed her PhD at the Royal Veterinary College researching chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats and undertook her residency training at Bristol Veterinary School sponsored by International Cat Care. She subsequently completed a clinical postdoctoral fellowship funded by Wellcome Trust at Bristol Medical School. Dr Finch is a European Veterinary Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Specialist in Feline Medicine and Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. She has an international reputation in the field of veterinary nephrology and has been awarded the International Renal Interest Society award in recognition of her contribution to advancement of this field. Dr Finch is the president of the European Society of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology. She is currently Head of Renal Medicine, Senior Clinician in Medicine and Clinical Research Lead at Langford Vets. Her clinical research interests include glomerular endothelial cell fenestrations, acute and chronic kidney diseases and the endothelial glycocalyx.
  • Rebecca Geddes MA, PhD, Royal Veterinary College, London, United Kingdom

Dr Geddes graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2007. She spent three years in first opinion small animal practice and completed a certificate in feline medicine before moving to the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in 2010 to start a PhD. Her thesis focused on calcium and phosphate homeostasis in cats with chronic kidney disease. Dr Geddes then stayed at the RVC to undertake a rotating internship and subsequently a residency in small animal internal medicine, gaining her ACVIM diploma in 2018. She currently works as a Senior Lecturer at the RVC, is an RCVS Specialist in small animal medicine and is a Founding Member of the American College of Nephrology and Urology. Dr Geddes is particularly interested in Endocrinology and Nephrology. Her current research interests include CKD, hypercalcemia and nephrolithiasis, and mineral and bone disorders.
