Heterogeneities of solid surfaces play a key-role in a wide range of physical processes including adsorption, catalysis, separation, gas storage, hydrophobic surfaces, electrochemistry, and many others. To share and broaden the understanding of the phenomena related to surface heterogeneity, a series of ISSHAC symposia have been organized which serving as a forum for an intensive exchange of information on experimental findings and theoretical approaches defining the state of the art and fostering progress in this field.
The last edition of the ISSHAC symposium (11th International Symposium Effects of Surface Heterogeneity in Adsorption, Catalysis and related Phenomena) was held at the picturesque Zegrze lake on September 19-22, 2022. Several dozen conference participants had the opportunity to present the results of their latest research. This special issue aims to summarize these remarkable and relevant scientific output as a series of articles in Adsorption Journal prepared by symposium participants.

Mariusz Barczak
Professor Mariusz Barczak from the beginning of his scientific career is affiliated at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (Poland). His research from the very beginning was related to the use of adsorption-based processes to challenge various scientific, industrial and environmental issues. Apart adsorption, his research interests include inter alia modern materials with defined properties, including biomaterials, hybrid materials and nanomaterials, as well as their applications of various types of materials in everyday life, industry and environmental protection.
