Drowning has claimed over 3 million lives in the past decade - mostly children and youth - demanding urgent action now. This #WorldDrowningPrevention Day, World Health Organization (WHO) is sharing powerful stories about changemakers from around the world who are helping to save lives and prevent lifelong disabilities caused by drowning. From teaching communities about water safety to developing national drowning prevention plans, their combined efforts have helped to keep people safe around water. 🛟Did you know life jackets are not the same as Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)? And that cushions are not approved as safety equipment on any boat? Life jackets come in red, orange or yellow. This makes you much easier to see in the water. They will turn you on your back to keep your face out of the water, even if you are unconscious! A Type II Child Vest (large collar) is recommended for children who are non-swimmers due to greater buoyancy. PFDs are more comfortable than lifejackets because they are designed for constant wear. But they do not offer the same level of protection as lifejackets for staying afloat and turning you on your back so you can breathe. Inflatable PFDs are available but NOT approved for anyone under 16 years old, anyone who weighs less than 36.3 kg (80 lbs), use on a personal watercraft; or white-water paddling activities. 80% of people who drown in recreational boating incidents are not wearing a lifejacket or PFD because they never intended to be in the water. Always wear it! And no matter what type you wear, you should choose a colour that makes you easy to see in the water. For more information, visit: https://lnkd.in/gzGhD8KU #NDPW2025 #SaferTogether

🛟Basic water safety is essential before entering one of Northwestern Ontario’s 70,000+ lakes! It only takes a moment. A child or weak swimmer can drown in the time it takes to reply to a text, check a fishing line or apply sunscreen. 📋Be prepared and informed when enjoying the lakes, rivers, and pools this summer: - Check the weather before heading out - Make sure you and your family learn to swim - Pay close attention to children or weak swimmers in or near water - Never swim or boat alone. Always keep children within arms’ reach - Always wear a life jacket that fits - Don’t drink and boat or swim - Carry a safety kit and know what to do in an emergency 🚣For more information on water safety and drowning prevention, visit: https://lnkd.in/gZYZwxD9 https://ndpa.org/layers/ https://lnkd.in/ezJx8-i #safertogether #NDPW2025
