Road to 2030: the annual HLPF will gather in New York to assess progress towards the SDGs

With only five years remaining until their 2030 deadline,  the world will gather at the 2025 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), from 14 to 23 July at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to take stock of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Despite ongoing global crises, success stories from every region show that change is possible.

The latest annual SDG progress report prepared by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs shows that over the past decade, maternal and child mortality rates have fallen, more young people are completing their education, and access to safe drinking water, sanitation, hygiene and clean cooking fuels continue to improve. Electricity coverage alone has climbed from 87 per cent to 92 per cent of the global population, demonstrating that coordinated action leads to real results. Despite these advancements, however, the world is on track to make moderate progress on 35 per cent of the 137 SDG targets.

To spur further action, the 2025 HLPF under the theme, “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for leaving no one behind,” will conduct in-depth reviews of  SDGs 3 (good health and well-being), 5 (gender equality), 8 (decent work and economic growth), 14 (life below water) and 17 (partnerships for the goals).

In addition to thematic reviews, this year’s HLPF marks an important milestone: It commemorates ten years since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the launch of the Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). Thirty-seven countries will present their successes, challenges, lessons learned, and actionstaken to advance the SDGs.
On 24 July, the High-level segment of ECOSOC will examine the long-term impacts of globalization on SDG achievement and the future of multilateral cooperation. A special session on "UN at 80: The role of ECOSOC in leading action for a stronger and more effective multilateral system" will consider how to revitalize ECOSOC’s leadership and functions—ensuring the Council is well-positioned to lead global action in a fast-changing world.
