Why the Netherlands Has One of the Best Health Systems in the World? Ranked #2 globally in the Mirror, Mirror report, the Netherlands continues to impress policymakers with how it combines private competition and universal care two things many countries struggle to balance. Since 2006, the Dutch system has worked on a simple but bold idea: let private insurers and providers compete, while the government guarantees fairness, access, and quality. The result? A system that delivers high performance and strong equity at the same time. Here are some highlights from the 2024 European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies Summary: 1- Nearly everyone is covered (99.9%) proving that competition can still serve public good. 2- Long-term care makes up over 27% of all health spending, the highest in Europe, showing real commitment to supporting people as they age. 3- Primary care is the backbone GPs act as gatekeepers, ensuring continuity and smarter use of hospital care. 4- The Netherlands has the lowest unmet health needs in Europe (0.3%), excellent cancer survival rates, and one of the lowest rates of preventable deaths. 5- The new Integrated Care Agreement (IZA) is reshaping how care works focusing more on prevention, mental health, and teamwork between sectors. The Dutch model isn’t perfect decentralization can slow decision-making in crises but it offers a valuable lesson for policymakers everywhere: “Building a strong #health system isn’t about spending more or less, it’s about spending wisely and designing around people, not structures.”

Exploring the Dutch 🇳🇱 Digital Health Frontier! This week I’m in Amsterdam for HLTH Europe, where healthcare disruptors, innovators, and decision-makers from across the globe gather to reimagine the future of care. On my journey over, I took a deep dive into the Dutch digital health and healthcare landscape. Here’s why the Netherlands continues to punch above its weight in global healthcare innovation: A World-Class Health System • Ranked among the top globally for access, equity, and outcomes (Euro Health Consumer Index, OECD). • Universal coverage, strong GP-centered model, and a focus on patient empowerment. Innovation with Purpose • Dutch startups don’t chase hype, they solve real problems. • Great examples: Luscii - an OMRON Healthcare service (virtual wards), Pacmed (AI-powered decision support), SkinVision (AI skin cancer screening). Digital Tools, Widely Used • Over 75% of citizens use digital health solutions from wearables to e-consults. • Nearly all GPs use electronic health records, and e-prescribing is standard. Connected Care, by Design • Interoperability is a national priority. Platforms like MedMij allow patients to manage all their health data via PGOs (personal health environments). • It’s one of Europe’s most mature health data-sharing ecosystems. Collaboration Is in the DNA • Public-private partnerships are at the forefront. • Living labs, user-led innovation, and academic partnerships (e.g., with UMC Utrecht, Radboudumc, Erasmus MC) accelerate real-world adoption. AI and Clinical Research Leadership • The Netherlands is at the forefront of AI in radiology, pathology, and hospital logistics, pioneered by academic medical centers and data-driven startups. Smart Funding, Real Scale • Government programs like Zorg voor Innoveren and Health~Holland provide structured pathways for digital health pilots to scale and integrate into care. • Reimbursement for digital tools (like telehealth and remote monitoring) is increasingly embedded in the system. Prevention and Sustainability First • The “Juiste Zorg op de Juiste Plek” strategy is shifting care from hospital to home—backed by digital tech, community care, and remote patient monitoring. 🏥 Hospital at Home – Better Care, New Business Stream at Capio ASIH Dalen 🏥 Some patients who need antibiotics directly into the bloodstream can now get this treatment safely at home. With close cooperation between hospital infection clinics and home care teams, patients can leave the hospital earlier and continue treatment using a small pump. This makes care safer, more comfortable, and frees up hospital beds for others who need them. In some cases, patients with cancer-related infections have also been treated at home, with promising results.
