Get started with Gemini in Chat
To summarize, generate action items, or answer questions about any space or conversation, use Gemini in Chat.
- On your computer, go to chat.google.com.
- Open the Chat standalone app or Chat in Gmail.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini
.
- Select from the list of suggestions.
- To get more options, select More suggestions.
- At the bottom, in the prompt box, replace the example text with the information that you want.
- Click Enter.
- At the bottom, in the prompt box, enter a prompt.
- Click Enter.
Tips:
- You can lose your conversation history when:
- You refresh your browser.
- You close and reopen Chat.
- Your computer goes offline.
- To remove your conversation history, click More options

You can use Gemini to summarize a file within a conversation if:
- A message isn’t blocked.
- File types shared as Drive links in Google Chat are:
- Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
- .csv
- .txt
- Zip files
- Microsoft Office formats, like:
- .docx (Word)
- .xlsx (Excel)
- .pptx (PowerPoint)
- Download restrictions are off for the file.
To summarize a file:
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
- Select a direct message or space with a file in the conversation.
- Under the file, click
Summarize this file.
While using Gemini in Chat, you can use Gemini to list action items from any conversation.
- In the side panel, you can prompt to ask for a list of action items.
