Nazi war criminal Alois Brunner , the right-hand man of Adolf Eichmann, served for decades as the advisor of Ba'athist dictator Hafez al-Assad in building Syria's secret police and security apparatus. Brunner is reported to have died in Damascus in 2001 or 2010. (en)
