A very strong way to begin Apple Arcade 2025

Normally I don’t review games, but this one is special. It is one of the most awesome games I’ve ever seen in Apple Arcade. The moves are smooth, there are a lot of them, graphics are nice and crisp, improvement over its predecessor, while it does slightly lack in content, what it has is amazing. Challenges help you learn the ropes, free skate allows you to explore the state at your own pace and my personal favorite, the pro skate, a procedural generated run each time you play. It is absolutely exhilarating especially in the later game to grind and do tricks in order to find awesome pathways that are different every run. This is a huge improvement then its predecessor in every way possible as this feels like the definitive version of skate city. The first one was lacking, empty, and a tad boring, but a huge step in the right direction as it created a decent and unique skating game with cool ideas but with the game being very flawed, it prevented it from reaching its maximum potential, however here, it takes the cool ideas and takes them to the next level with different pathways, more unique runs, and more tricks/moves which turn it into what the first game should have been. Overall, skate city: New York is an amazing skating game that is not just a huge improvement then its predecessor, but also a strong way to begin 2025 for Apple Arcade.

Very good game, one tiny issue

Edit: saw the response. The buttons did feel too low, I did click lower on the screen but often times it was in the way. Maybe make a censor to activate and deactivate them. This game is pretty awesome from the start. Just completed the tutorial and I already know it’s going to be a hit in the Apple Store. One thing I love about this game’s layout is the easy and visible access to Game Center from the title screen compared to many other games from the Arcade. There is no lag as well. Finally, during tutorial, the format of the controls seems pretty easy to understand. Right hand to push, left hand to do tricks. I like it. It’s simple and looks pretty good.There is one problem. During the tutorial, the Game Center button appears right on top of the right button, which makes the game almost unplayable. As well as, when the game instructs me to click on the top left of the screen, the menu button is sort of in the way and I would click it most of the time by accident.

Ah interesting, may be a bug. Thanks for spotting! We appreciate that some of the advanced tricks in the top half of the screen can be tricky to get used to. You may want to try your inputs just a bit lower... They are picked up right near the boarder of the screen so you don't have to tap/press/swipe too high...

As someone who actually skates (for 25 years and I still skate every day) I hate this. It’s not the controls, it’s not the graphics, it’s the fundamental design of creating a linear skateboarding experience. That’s literally anti-skateboarding. It goes against what skateboarding is about; freedom. The reason three dimensional spaces are necessary for a skateboarding game is because it’s a three dimensional experience. You can fail to land a trick and just go back and try again. You can’t really do this here. They have a marker system, but it’s not quick enough for a simulated experience. It’s finicky at best. I feel rushed in this game every single time I see an obstacle. This is not how three dimensional activities work. Skateboarding isn’t a 2D platforming game with limited view in front of the player. It requires being able to study the obstacle in front of you and figure out how to skate it. You have no time to do that here, since you see a ledge or rail for a maximum of one second before you have to react. Other skateboarding games understood that you need time to see a ledge in the distance and prepare mentally what you will do. This game should not exist. It should have been an idea, that when the developer saw the execution in early prototyping, scraped the idea and went for a more fully three dimensional environment.

I think that the game is in need of more modes and especially areas. I think that it would be good if there was a mode like pro skate but you aren’t worrying about goals more than just getting points. Second of all I think that the game needs more areas or at least more variety. Many times I found myself in free skate and noticed that you just go and go in loops with just the three areas we have.
