Seven people displaced after NW Calgary house fire

Rayn Rashid is at the scene of a big house fire in the NW Calgary community of Sherwood early Thursday morning.

Seven people were able to safely escape after their home in northwest Calgary caught fire early Thursday morning.

Alex Kwan with the Calgary Fire Department says crews were called to Sherwood Crescent NW around 12:15 a.m.

When they arrived, firefighters found heavy flames and smoke coming from the back of a two-storey home with an attached garage.

Multiple hose lines were used to begin knocking down the fire, which had spread up the back of the home, into the roof and ceiling.

Two neighbouring homes were also damaged, but crews were able to control the spread. The residents of those homes were able to return.

Kwan says efforts by crews were successful despite challenging conditions.

“We were concerned as wind gusts were over 40 kilometers an hour last night, so crews did report the wind shifted quite a few times on them,” he explained. “But, they were able to keep the damage limited.”

In total 17 people self-evacuated from the three homes. No injuries have been reported.

Kwan says smoke alarms in the home were working, and everyone inside self-evacuated before crews got there.

He adds this is an important reminder to make sure all the alarms in your house are operational.

“Make sure you routinely test your smoke alarms once a month, replace any backup batteries, replace the batteries at least once a year, and replace the smoke alarms every 10 years,” Kwan said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Kwan says the most common cause of fires on the exterior of homes continues to be improper disposal of smoking materials.

“So just me reminding everybody, particularly as we have the windier conditions —  to always make sure that any smoking materials are completely extinguished,” he said. “So, in a tin can of sand or water, and just making sure that they reduce that risk of any of those type of fires.”

This street was the site of a second-alarm fire in July 2021. In that incident, three homes suffered significant damage due to the spreading of the fire.
