I've enjoyed your work - enough to feature it on my show.

...but this post follows this bizarre idea that I've seen floating around for years on social media: this incessant mantra of: "I can't stand the (slightly) toxic atmosphere here but I'm staying at the other (moreso) toxic spots because my social circle there is too important to me." That logic only works if one's social circle is somehow incapable of moving, which, in the digital age, is rarely the case.

It suggests either a deep-seated fear of losing status or relevance by stepping outside a familiar ecosystem, or a rationalization for not actually wanting to leave, despite the professed moral discomfort. Either way, it reveals a prioritization of convenience, community inertia, or social validation over the supposed ethical imperative.

The weird part is that it’s often framed as a reluctant martyrdom - “I’d love to leave (there), but I just can’t abandon my people.” But why should their admiration be conditional on one’s presence in that exact space? It's a bizarre quirk that completely boggles the mind. It’s not just about friends or fans, it’s about the specific social gravity of that platform and the fear of stepping into a different orbit.

Being social isn’t about finding a perfectly aligned space where everyone shares your values - it’s about navigating the mess, making compromises, and deciding which discomforts you’re willing to tolerate for the sake of connection - professional or otherwise. I hope you're able to someday find that elusive space that has all of the right qualities. Just don't expect everyone else there to find those same qualities as capably endearing as you would.
