When Security Meets the User Journey 🚫🐴 In product management, there’s a classic trap in putting the cart before the horse. I’ve seen it firsthand in cybersecurity products: teams invest heavily in advanced protection features before understanding how customers will actually experience them. A few years back, I was leading a product rollout where we made that exact mistake. Not a technical one but a customer experience-journey one. Our multi-factor authentication flow looked great on paper. It was secure, compliant, airtight… And yet, 60% of SMB users dropped off mid-setup. Why? Because we unintentionally made the secure path too painful. That’s when it hit me as product managers, our job isn’t just to ship secure features… It’s to design security that customers will adopt. Here’s how we course-corrected: 🎯 Audited the friction. We mapped every decision point, not just the happy path. 🎯 Simplified the process. A 12-step setup became 3 steps, guided by AI-based prompts. 🎯 Redefined success metrics. “Did we offer MFA?” shifted to “Did 95% of users enable MFA?” The result: MFA adoption jumped from 65% to 98% in one month. That experience changed how I think as a product leader. True product security isn’t just built, it’s adopted. For fellow CPOs, CTOs, and CEOs: Our strongest security strategy starts with the product mindset, balancing defense and experience, code and context, protection and participation.
