Willcom had a vinyl record emoji (P.44, J+F06B), but the correspondence tables of Japanese carriers matched it with CD emojis. |
Another argument for this character is to help with English disambiguation of the homograph "record" (noun vs verb) pronunciation and meaning differ. The emoji character could also be used as an accessibilityLabel so that assistive technology screen readers pronounce "Record" correctly. |
The vinyl record emoji has been stuck at "prioritization pending" since March 2020 and I wish some movement would happen. |
+1 on this! Just ran into a situation where I needed it; had to resort to "OPTICAL DISK" (U+01F4BF). It really should be there by now. |
There are two legacy digital optical-disc emojis, CD U+1F4BF and DVD U+1F4C0, but none for analog media like Vinyl or Shellac discs, nor for their playback devices (e.g. a grammophone with iconic speaker). It would differ by color (i.e. black) and diameter proportions.
An MC / audio cassette-like Tape Cartridge π U+1F5AD character exists , but is not an emoji proper. For film, a reel / strip and a video cassette emoji exist.
