Ran into an issue because of this yesterday. earthpy 0.9.4 still depends on the setuptools package. In particular earthpy/__init__.py contains the line from pkg_resources import resource_string however, pkg_resources was removed from setuptools v81 released on 6 Feb 2026 (see here).

This means that anyone who installs via pip install earthpy will get version 0.9.4 from pypi and, when running import earthpy, will see the error ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pkg_resources'. I suspect installing a reverted version of setuptools will fix this, but I have not tested this.

Alternatively, installing earthpy via pip install git+https://github.com/earthlab/earthpy.git@v0.10.1 will use the latest release from the reop (not available on pypi), which seems to have fixed this issue in 8aee1e6.

Although I don't use conda, it appears that v0.9.4 is the latest earthpy version available there as well.

This could be addressed by either updating the install instructions to recommend installing from the lates release from the repo or publishing the latest release to pypi and/or conda.
