Consider making edge detection accessible for screen reader users #44

Hello ,

Thanks for such a robust scanning app.

Let me tell you a bit of my life story. I think it will help me to better describe my idea.

Currently I'm working as a sysadmin for a small local company. Scanning of printed books is my topic since mid 90s because I am blind. Now access to digital documents is improving however during my studies I have used flatbed scanner and various apps to scan whole books frequently as at that time it was the only viable option to keep up with the studies.

Later on various commercial apps and products became available assisting blind and low vision users to scan and OCR their paper documents.

However none of these solutions are free, privacy respecting and very few of them have capability to perform OCR on the device directly.

Additionally features automatic edge detection and automatic cropping really got into my attention.

It's naturall I'd prefer free, privacy respecting app like this over other solutions and with my limited understanding of the matter I think this app is very close to my goal.

And now my questions:

Right after launching the app it's ready for taking the photo. There is an options button on the initial screen and in the popup menu there is an item saying Edge detection preview. Am I understanding it correctly that on the initial screen the app is displaying the image content as seen by the device camera?
When the edge detection preview is enabled is the image also displaying the marks where engine has detected all four edges?

Would it be possible to add some notifications or audible signals to assist with camera positioning for blind people and other people with low vision? Please are you seeing it as doable technically and would you please consider it for the future?

Since android 16, there are changes on how apps should announce live messages like these for the screen reader users so I am not sure how to implement the actual announcement but I think I should be able to research this part or find someone who might have more precise suggestions.
Here is a link to the developer documentation on this: https://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/View#announceForAccessibility(java.lang.CharSequence)
Although this announcement accessibility event is now deprecated I know most screen readers are still handling it these days.

Thanks for the wonderfull app and I'm looking forward to your stance on this.
If my request is not detailed enough or you would like me to try explaining it in a different words, please let me know.

Greetings

Peter
