I discussed briefly with @hoxbro regarding this idea:

Currently, HoloViews has two separate gallery sections:

• Gallery: Contains advanced examples with multiple figures and interactive apps
• Reference Gallery: Focuses on individual element demonstrations (e.g., Curve, Scatter)

While both serve somewhat distinct purposes, there is some overlap in their content, which might be a bit confusing for new users (e.g, Me!).

Proposed Idea

I propose consolidating both galleries under a single directory structure while maintaining their distinct purposes. Here's a suggested organization:

gallery/

• elements/ Current Reference Gallery content
  • basic/ Basic element examples
  • advanced/ More complex element demonstrations
• applications/ Current Gallery content
  • interactive/ Interactive apps and dashboards
  • multi-figure/ Examples with multiple figures
• README.md Documentation of the gallery structure

Benefits

1. Clearer Organization: Single entry point for all gallery examples
2. Better Discoverability: Users can easily find both basic and advanced examples
3. Reduced Confusion: Eliminates the need to choose between two different galleries
4. Easier Maintenance: Centralized location for all examples

Implementation Considerations

• Need to update documentation and links
• Consider adding clear section headers and descriptions
• May need to update CI/CD pipelines if they reference specific gallery paths
• Should maintain backward compatibility for existing links

If this proposal receives positive feedback, we can:

1. Create a detailed implementation plan
2. Set up a migration strategy
3. Update documentation
4. Create a PR with the new structure
