Normalize e.g. instances, or reduce them? #1423

Description

@ivanov

We have all possible combinations of EG, Eg, eg, E.G., e.g., Eg., etc sprinkled throughout docstrings.

maybe I'm just being weird, but I think we should normalize them (have all spelled with two periods) and/or reduce their usage where it becomes a visual nuisance.

I can imagine how it might be confusing - even though this is a latin abbreviation - for a non-native english speaker to try to parse out what the word "eg" might mean, and wonder if it's just a typo of 'egg', or something.
