Why not just change the gather icon into a busy icon or similar. Personally I think that's better.
The busy icon feels better to me as that's closer to what the user clicked and they can see the state change immediately, where as the status bar is at the bottom, away from where the user is focusing.
This way, we don't need to worry about 2seconds or the like.

You can add a busy icon that spins, just use css animations to transform the image (rotate). |

Maybe make this 2000 a constant? Seems to be repeated at least once and might make it easier to understand why the 2 sec wait.
