When activating screen shader from Waybar Tools 'Toggle Screen Shader' nothing seems to happen

Steps to reproduce

1. mouse hover over Waybar Tools 'Toggle Screen Shader'
2. left click

Expected behavior

activate the hyprland screen shader

I have used it successfully before at night
I don't know when it stopped working
Is https://github.com/loqusion/hyprshade still needed for this to function? Hyprland wiki still mentions it

executing directly from CLI gives:
