  1. PeriodicConverter using mdates units

    Previously PeriodicConverter used plotting units based on
    the data's period frequency, instead of the standardized
    matplotlib.dates units. This means that plots generated
    from pandas.PeriodIndex will not be compatible with
    any other matplotlib API related to dates.
    
    This is an experimental commit to directly plot PeriodIndex
    by converting to dates and using the DatetimeConverter
    instead. This fixes the API compatibility issues. However
    it seems to introduce some additional performance issues.
