What I like about this piece, beyond the fine storytelling, is recognizing the encouragement and determination driving that young man's optimism, his dream. Though that feeling has a universal spirit to it, I like to think it manifestly American, an unfettered idealism born of endless opportunities and possibilities. Yes, I know that's not the real world, yet now, with more years behind us than ahead, I wonder how that optimism and hope have worn. Idealism's patina tarnishes, assuredly, but I believe we still retain some of that youthful shine within us, worthy of sharing, as did the writer of this good work.

Bicycling is a great way to maintain some fitness, less impactful on your body than running.. assuming you don't fall. I finally found some motivation to get back on my road bike cycle after 17yrs and I'm just now realizing I didn't have any real appreciation for being as fit as I used to be.

This last quarter of my life is starting to take on new meaning and appreciation.

Love your writing and I'm glad you're keeping your voice out there.
