There is a small, glorious slip of time between Christmas and New Year’s Eve when what’s usual is suspended. It’s the week when things don’t really count. The cookies you eat while cleaning up the kitchen? Don’t count. The hours of Pluribus watched in pants that may or may not be pajamas—also don’t count. The mindless scrolling, the languid two-cups-of-coffee mornings, the strange sense that it’s both Tuesday and Saturday (or Mondesday) at the same time? Completely uncounted. It’s the week before intentions arrive. Before we’re supposed to be better versions of ourselves—more disciplined, more intentional, more everything (freshly sprinkled with this). So for now, a moment of drift.

Slipping away to the beach in that same uncounted spirit—the future politely out of reach, the escape itself barely registering—a soft, sandy pause before resolve hardens again. All the while, I’m dressing the part.
