Is Debian on 256 MB RAM no longer possible?

by
dan@upvote.au

I run dnstools.ws which lets you perform DNS lookups, pings, traceroutes, etc. from 25 locations around the world. Each location is powered by a VPS running Debian, running a C# service that’s compiled to native code ahead-of-time using Native AOT. It uses ~60MB RAM.

SPIRIT-ual Successor to the "Building a Linux Phone" project

by
digitalRights4All@lemmy.zip

Per my last post, (which can be found here: https://lemmy.zip/post/53113975), I continued to mess around with a mobile broadband modem, and got it working! With a caveat… it only works when plugged into wall power. The battery I have does not supply enough power to fully enable the modem through USB power, due the raspberry pi being very power hungry. Unfortunately, this seemingly simple problem is actually a larger problem that seems to only be solved by an overly complicated solution: designing a custom battery controller PCB that responds to the pi5’s (or ideally, a different processor entirely) needs more appropriately.

I’m testing out the SecureBlue distro, the concept is very cool and I am still learning my ways around it. Anyhow, SecureBlue came with its own hardened browser: Trivalent. It is great and coming from GrapheneOS on my phone, this feels like at home.

I wanted a sanity check on my current rsync flags. Posts on Reddit seem to highlight the use of rsync -avz for most use cases, for some instances even for when someone asks for mirroring a drive: https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/rau071/rsync_command_to_mirror_drive/. This has not worked for me for the following case:

App Lock under Linux?

by
Eugenia@lemmy.ml

Friend asks: I would like to make an app to ask for authentication before launching. I can do that on MacOS via creating an encrypted disc image and put the app in there, and windows has robust third party tools for it. But how would you go about it on Linux, especially since it’s a .deb (that gets auto-updated all the time via its repo) and not an appimage/flatpak? Others need access to the user account, but I want to restrict that one app. Creating a different user account for it is out of the question btw, since you can still change the password for that user via the primary admin account. Also, I don’t want to be running full VMs that take forever to boot to use that one app. Is there any simple way to lock an app under Linux?

I installed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS about a year ago. Now that 26.04 is out, I was planning to upgrade, but instead I think I’m going to wipe and re-install from scratch. Does anyone have any tips or tweaks they recommend for new installs? Things like, do or don’t encrypt the drive during the install process, make an administrator account separate from your regular user account? I already plan to install the Flatpak repo and the Gnome Software Center.

Booting to Steam Big Picture under certain conditions

by
galaxy_nova@lemmy.world

Hi all, I’ve no idea if this is possible but figured I’d see if anyone has done anything similar. Here’s the problem: basically I have a tv that I sometimes plug into my desktop pc in my room. Problem is when I do so I have to manually move cables around to remove the desktop monitors and then I need a mouse and keyboard to get into steam big picture. If anything breaks along the way I need to use a keyboard and mouse again. What I’d like to do is somehow be able to say under certain conditions only use the tv as a monitor otherwise ignore it and vice versa so I don’t have to unplug it or replug it every time I switch between my desk or my couch. Another want is to have it boot straight to big picture when and only when my tv is connected. I suspect this is something I could solve with scripting? Just would need to know where to look. Also could possibly dual boot say bazzite but that wouldn’t be a full solution. I do have another pc that I’ve slowly accumulated from upgrades but the 7700xt isn’t really a 4k card. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’d wanted to jump to Linux since the 90s, but it was never quite there for me, plus my day jerb requires me to be on Windows. I finally started ripping the band-aid off a couple years ago and it’s been amazing. I received a private message in response to a long-running issue I was having with my dGPU, and that person absolutely got me squared away by suggesting I give Aurora Linux a try for use cases.

Linux

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word “Linux” in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
