Pre-Engineering at RU-N

About Our Program

The Engineering Transfer Program is designed for currently enrolled students in the School of Arts & Sciences-Newark (SASN) interested in a bachelor of science degree in engineering.  The pre-engineering program offered at Rutgers University-Newark is in collaboration with the Rutgers School of Engineering on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus.  Students in the engineering transfer program follow the required engineering curriculum for one to two years at Rutgers University-Newark.  Once the necessary courses have been successfully completed and the required GPA has been met, students will apply to transfer to the Rutgers School of Engineering via the School-to-School Transfer application. Students will complete the remaining coursework in the School of Engineering on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus.  Students are able to follow one of the five tracks in engineering: Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical & Computer, or Mechanical.

Important Note on Applying to Rutgers University-Newark

Please indicate your interest in "pre-engineering" on your Admissions application or at the time of advisement/registration so that you may be properly advised.

Accordion Content

  • All newly admitted first-year students take Rutgers University's mathematics placement exam prior to registering for their first semester. The mathematics placement exam is designed to provide information about students' individual skills in mathematics. The placement exam results will be used to enroll students in the appropriate mathematics course that best matches appropriate to their level of preparation. In some cases, this may be a developmental course.

It is crucial that students seriously prepare for their placement exam.  Students admitted with an interest in the Pre-Engineering Program are expected to begin with Calculus I

For those students who place below Calculus I, they must work closely with the Pre-Engineering Advisor to design an academic plan that best suits their academic goals and needs.

  • There are five program tracks that pre-engineering students can follow. Please see below for the curriculum for each track that pre-engineering students follow in their first year at Rutgers-Newark.

    Biomedical Engineering
    Chemical Engineering
    Civil Engineering
    Electrical Engineering
    Mechanical Engineering

For any questions regarding the track curricula, please contact the Pre-Professional Services Team or Pre-Engineering advisor (listed below).

  • Pre-engineering students must ultimately transfer to the School of Engineering (SOE) in New Brunswick to proceed with obtaining a bachelor's degree in Engineering. Students transferring from one Rutgers school/campus to another must follow our School-to-School Transfer process.

Information regarding the criteria students must meet prior to pursuing a school-to-school transfer to SOE can be found on the SOE website. This website also includes the contact information for the SOE staff so pre-engineering students know where to reach out (and to whom) with any prospective engineering student inquiries.

  • Pre-engineering students enrolled at the School of Arts & Sciences-Newark (SASN) can reach out to our Pre-Engineering Advisor with any questions or concerns:
