EXCLUSIVE: TOM CRUISE DROPPED FROM ‘MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE’ — NEW LEAD INCOMING

It’s the end of an action era. After nearly three decades as cinema’s most fearless spy, Tom Cruise has been benched from the Mission: Impossible franchise.

#ShuterScoop can confirm that Cruise, 62, will not return as Ethan Hunt following the underwhelming performance of Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning. Despite a global press tour and a sky-high budget topping $400 million, the film failed to ignite the box office and is on track to rank just fifth in the series.

“Tom’s not coming back,” a studio source shares. “This chapter is closed — and everyone knows it.”

Paramount is planning a 3-to-4-year pause before launching a full reboot with a new leading man and creative vision. While insiders insist there’s “still juice in the brand,” Cruise’s era is officially over.

Over the years, Cruise turned Mission: Impossible into one of Hollywood’s most iconic action franchises — dangling off planes, leaping from rooftops, and holding tight to Ethan Hunt’s legacy. But even his legendary work ethic couldn’t outrun shifting audience interest and franchise fatigue.

“He gave it everything,” one industry executive tells #ShuterScoop. “But now it’s time to pass the baton.”

PLATO, computer-based education system created in 1960 by Donald L. Bitzer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). In addition to being used successfully as a teaching tool, PLATO also spawned one of the first successful online communities. In many ways, PLATO’s development foreshadowed the Internet. Development

Bitzer, a professor of electrical engineering at UIUC, was interested in matters of literacy. He was inspired to create PLATO when he read that 50 percent of students graduating from high school in the United States were functionally illiterate. In a discussion about literacy, a colleague of Bitzer’s, Chalmers Sherwin, asked whether it might be possible to use computers for education. Bitzer believed that it could be done and set to work to realize the goal of computer-based education by assembling a team of software coders ranging from professors to high-school students.

PLATO was based on a time-sharing computer system, with users and programmers connected to a central mainframe. The first demonstration of PLATO took place on the ILLIAC I computer, which in later versions of PLATO was replaced by a Control Data Corporation (CDC) 1604 computer. The programmers, faculty, and graduate students (and some undergraduates) used programming languages, such as FORTRAN and later TUTOR, to write educational materials.

During the 1960s PLATO was used in a single classroom, but the significance of its development was apparent. In the latter half of that decade, Bitzer and colleagues established the Computer-Based Education Research Laboratory (CERL) at UIUC, and work on PLATO continued. By the early 1970s, as the processing power of mainframe computers progressed, PLATO was able to support 1,000 simultaneous users. The connection speed for the workstations that interfaced the mainframe was 1,200 bps (bits per second). PLATO output only text, so the rate of exchange between PLATO users seemed sufficiently fast for communication and education.

The ability to support so many users simultaneously helped facilitate the creation of an online community, which was further made possible by David R. Woolley’s authorship of PLATO Notes, a threaded discussion application that later evolved into Group Notes. Woolley was a student at UIUC at the time and had been working at CERL. He and his colleagues had become frustrated with the process of fixing bugs in PLATO and reporting those fixes. Woolley’s solution was to create a threaded message system that incorporated user IDs and date and time stamping, allowed multiple responses to each entry, and included menus and indices.

PLATO Notes quickly came to be used for a multitude of discussions beyond the fixing of bugs. At about the same time that Woolley created Notes, Doug Brown developed a program called Talkomatic that enabled real-time chat between users. Up to five active participants could utilize a single Talkomatic channel, while any number of users could log in as observers only. Channels could be created by any user at any time. Once a channel was created, however, users could prevent others from joining or observing, thereby creating private chat channels. Soon after the creation of Talkomatic and another real-time chat application, Term-talk, PLATO’s use for online interaction and communication became predominant. Despite that multitude of communication options, PLATO did not initially have an e-mail application with which one could send private messages, but one was released in the summer of 1974.

UIUC had numerous PLATO terminals in public computer labs and public spaces. What had started as a means of creating educational materials and fostering literacy came instead to foster online communities, distance education, online classified ads, discussion groups on myriad topics, PLATO “celebrities,” and even romance—all features of the Internet in the early 21st century. PLATO users struggled with issues that contemporary Internet users also encounter, such as user anonymity and identity, privacy, and security. Multiuser and single-user games were popular PLATO features. Among the first games were a version of MIT’s Spacewar! and a Dungeons & Dragons-like game called Avatar. Many users spent entire nights and weekends gaming in PLATO labs on the UIUC campus.

The terminals themselves consisted of two parts: a large box, which held a monochrome (amber) monitor, and a keyboard. Later iterations of the terminal came to incorporate a touch-screen interface, and both it and the keyboard were well able to withstand constant use in public places.PLATO’s development after the early 1970s came to rely on the user community. Those who worked to write applications regularly sought user feedback and input, and in many cases users who had first encountered PLATO by means of a class assignment came to work in CERL. In the mid-1970s CDC licensed the PLATO system from UIUC and began to commercialize it. By the mid-1980s there were more than 100 PLATO systems around the world, most at educational institutions. With further software development, means were devised by which those systems could be linked to one another, and essentially “internetworks” of PLATO systems were operational by the late 1970s. Network gaming—one of the most popular PLATO pastimes—came to be banned (on and off) by university administrators.

The introduction of the personal computer (PC) in the 1980s helped bring about an end to the original versions of PLATO. Networking PCs was less expensive than building out PLATO systems, and the University of Illinois campus system began using NovaNET, a PC-based education system that essentially interfaced with PLATO via PCs instead of PLATO terminals. CDC, which hewed to its mainframe history, was entirely unprepared for the PC’s growth and began a retrenchment. CDC focused PLATO on delivering computer-based instruction and training for the U.S. Department of Defense and other agencies, later renaming it CYBIS and selling it in the 1990s to Vcampus Corp. In 1989 CDC sold the PLATO name to TRO, Inc.

The Dvorak Keyboard: the Basics

The Dvorak keyboard is an ergonomic alternative to the layout commonly found on typewriters and computers known as “Qwerty”. The Qwerty keyboard was designed in the 1870s to accommodate the slow mechanical movement of early typewriters. When it was designed, touch typing literally hadn’t even been thought of yet! It’s hardly an efficient design for today’s use.

In contrast, the Dvorak (pronounced “duh-VOR-ack”, not like the Czech composer) keyboard was designed with emphasis on typist comfort, high productivity and ease of learning — it’s much easier to learn.

There were several variations in the Dvorak’s design in its first few decades, but these were settled when the American National Standards Institute approved a standard for the layout of the Dvorak in 1982. The diagram above shows that standard layout as adapted for computer use.

Because computer-based research wasn’t even a researcher’s dream in the late 1920s and 30s, the Dvorak design took about 12 years to perfect, and included extensive study of languages using the Roman alphabet (mostly English), the physiology of the hand, and practical studies.

Dr. Dvorak (Univ. of Washington, Seattle; he lived 1894–1975) used his research to design two other keyboards specifically for people with only one hand (one each for the right and left), which allow people with the use of just one hand to type very easily and efficiently — at speeds up to 50 wpm.

Why Is Dvorak Easier to Learn?

The Dvorak layout has the most-used consonants on the right side of the home row, and the vowels on the left side of the home row. Among other design features, it is set up to facilitate keying in a back-and-forth motion — (right hand, then left hand, then right, etc.) The back-and-forth flow obviously makes typing quicker and easier: try typing the word “minimum” on the Qwerty keyboard, then look how you’d type it on Dvorak.

When the same hand has to be used for more than one letter in a row (e.g., the common t-h), it is designed not only to use different fingers when possible (to make keying quicker and easier), but also to progress from the outer fingers to the inner fingers (“inboard stroke flow”) — it’s easier to drum your fingers this way (try it on a tabletop).

The Dvorak design puts fully 70 percent of all English keystrokes on the home row (only 32 percent of Qwerty’s are on the home row), making Dvorak much easier, faster, and — probably (no formal studies have been done as yet, but anecdotal evidence supports it) — less likely to result in carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive motion injuries.

Remember when you took typing classes, probably in high school? You got to do drills with such “words” as “fff”, “jjj”, and “jkl;” — why practice such specific nonsense that you will never actually type? Added to the awkward physical motions Qwerty requires, these nonsense words are counter-intuitive, making Qwerty very hard to learn. On Dvorak, the keys on the home row alone make up literally thousands of words (we have a list of nearly 5000 from one electronic dictionary alone!), meaning you could have typed real words on your first day of typing class …if you had learned on a Dvorak keyboard.

The row above the home row contains the next-most-used letters and punctuation. Why? Because it is easier for your fingers to reach up on the keyboard than down. What’s left are the least-used keys, which are obviously relegated to the bottom row.

Should We Switch?

Even if you don’t want to switch (it’s actually fairly easy — I did it in college, and my typing speed went from 50 WPM to over 100), why the heck are we forcing children to learn the draconian ergonomic failure “Qwerty” when there’s a such a good alternative available?

Why teach kids for weeks and weeks and weeks to master a complex skill when in two or three weeks they could learn Dvorak, and then get on with what they’re at the keyboard to do! Writing, programming …creating!

If it’s so good, why isn’t everyone using it? Clearly, a good question. There are a lot of reasons for it, and they are too numerous and complicated to explain fully here (they are fully explained in my book The Dvorak Keyboard). Mainly, the Qwerty keyboard became entrenched in tradition. By the time Dr. Dvorak came up with his design, there were hundreds of thousands of typewriters, and it would have cost millions to convert them all over.

Yet the benefits were so obvious that the switch was just about to be made, but then World War II broke out, and the War Dept. ordered all typewriter keyboards be set to the most-common standard: Qwerty. Typewriter manufacturers, meanwhile, retooled to produce small arms. By the end of the war, Qwerty was cast in concrete.

Then Add Discrimination!?!

Unbelievably, there are people with personal vendettas against the Dvorak. In 1956, a U.S. government researcher published an astoundingly biased “study” that railed against the Dvorak layout. When other researchers found the conclusions suspicious, they asked to see the raw data — but the government researcher had destroyed it all! Yet the anti-Dvorak still point to the “study” by the General Services Administration as “proof” that there’s something wrong with the Dvorak. But their “evidence” doesn’t even exist.

Such vendettas exist now, too. The most commonly quoted anti-Dvorak screed over the past few years is one by Stan Liebowitz and Stephen Margolis. I responded to that one way back in 1995 (copy of that here).

Certainly, people are using it. How many? It’s impossible to know: unlike typewriters, which needed precision mechanical work to convert them, computers are by their nature programmable, and it’s a cinch to convert them to Dvorak. So how many people have actually done that? The only way to really find out is to do an expensive controlled survey, and no one is rushing forth with the money to fund such a study.

Adobe Co-Founder Dr. John Warnock Passes at 82

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- It is with profound sadness that Adobe shares the passing of the company’s beloved co-founder Dr. John Warnock. Dr. Warnock passed away on Saturday surrounded by his family.

Dr. Warnock co-founded Adobe in 1982 with Dr. Charles Geschke after meeting as colleagues at Xerox. Their first product was Adobe PostScript, groundbreaking technology that sparked the desktop publishing revolution. Dr. Warnock retired as CEO in 2000 and he was chairman of the board, a position he shared with Dr. Geschke, until 2017. He was a member of the Board of Directors since then. In recognition of their technical achievements, Dr. Warnock was awarded the prestigious National Medal of Technology and Innovation by President Barack Obama; the Computer Entrepreneur Award from the IEEE Computer Society; the American Electronics Association Medal of Achievement; and the Marconi Prize for contributions to information science and communications.

My interactions with John over the past 25 years have been the highlight of my professional career. At breakfasts with John and Chuck, we would imagine the future, however, it was our varied conversations on rare books, art, world history and politics that gave me unique insight into John, who was truly a renaissance man (we also loved rooting jointly for the Warriors!). While he was my role model and mentor, I am most grateful to count him as a friend.

As I reflect on this loss that will leave a huge void in our lives, I think back to a few months ago when I saw John for the 30th anniversary of Acrobat. After the event, where we celebrated the impact of Acrobat and PDF on the world of communication, we talked about the potential of Firefly to transform the next generation of creative technology. With a twinkle in his eye, he said that he was amazed with the progress and as always had feedback on how we could make it better!

My thoughts are with Marva and his entire family. There is nothing he would like more than to continue his amazing legacy so let's continue to make him proud.

Winner of the Grand Clio and four of six Gold Clio winners used Macromedia products to create award-winning interactive work

SAN FRANCISCO, CA  June 13, 2000  shockwave.com today announced it has appointed former Pixar Animation Studios executive Lawrence Levy as its president and CEO.  Levy also joins the board of directors of the company.

The appointment is effective June 19.  Rob Burgess continues as chairman of shockwave.com and chairman and chief executive officer of Macromedia.

IBM AND MACROMEDIA FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE TO ACCELERATE E-BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT 

Companies will ease development and deployment of personalized e-business applications 

Somers, New York, and San Francisco, California -- May 30, 2000  IBM (NYSE:

IBM) and Macromedia, Inc. (NASDAQ: MACR), today announced a multi-faceted agreement that will bring IBM's Web development and deployment platform to Macromedia customers, integrate Macromedia's Web development software into the WebSphere(TM)software platform, and license Macromedia(R)LikeMinds(TM) Personalization Server for use in future releases of IBM WebSphere product offerings. 

The objective of the multi-year agreement including product bundles, product integration and joint marketing efforts, is to give customers a comprehensive Web development and deployment environment based on IBM's WebSphere product offerings, while delivering on the Macromedia Web Content Lifecycle. 

The IBM WebSphere software platform offers customers a powerful development and deployment environment for next-generation e-business applications.  The Macromedia Web Content Lifecycle helps eliminate difficulties enterprises face in integrating point solutions to build, manage, personalize, and analyze dynamic Web content while engaging customers on complex, business-critical Web sites. 

Under the agreement, IBM will license and distribute Macromedia LikeMinds Personalization Server as an integrated component of future versions of WebSphere product offerings, including WebSphere Commerce Suite(TM). This licensing and distribution agreement will bring LikeMinds patented collaborative filtering personalization technology to IBM WebSphere Platform users, helping them engage Web visitors and improve online results with highly accurate product and content recommendations. 

In addition, Macromedia will license and distribute a developer version of the IBM WebSphere Application Server with its market-leading visual Web content authoring platforms, Macromedia Dreamweaver(R) and the newly announced Macromedia Dreamweaver UltraDev(TM).  Dreamweaver UltraDev enables visual authoring of JavaServer Pages as fully supported by IBM's WebSphere platform.

IBM will also provide extensions to further integrate the Dreamweaver UltraDev development platform with IBM's WebSphere Studio, providing Macromedia developers a complete Java-based team programming solution and an out-of-the-box application server development and deployment environment based on IBM WebSphere. 

Also, IBM will bundle trial versions of Macromedia Flash(TM), Freehand(R), Director(R), and Fireworks(R) with every copy of the WebSphere Studio.

The State of Entertainment: Social Media vs Traditional Media

 Creators are walking away from million dollar streaming deals.

Andrew Schulz and Yes Theory are great examples:

1. Andrew Schulz took his life savings and bought back the rights to his comedy special after the streaming service expressed their intentions of cutting out parts of his jokes.

2. Yes Theory cut ties with a streaming service due to creative differences after the platform provided

$1,250,000 in funding for the post-production of their feature length documentary Project Iceman.

The Results:

1. Andrew Schulz stated that he made 3x the money he put into his special a few weeks after he self-released it on his website and on Youtube.

2. Yes Theory went on a worldwide theatrical tour for their documentary and sold out every single screening they had.

 The Lesson:

Many creators who have already amassed a large audience understand that distributors are not always needed to release their projects. Especially when they feel boxed in by the streamer's creative control.

The idea here is that you take the risk by owning the rights to your work. This means that if it fails, you lose because you're 100% responsible.

But you also gain creative freedom and potential economic upside if the project financially succeeds.

Streaming services are great and without them we wouldn't have some of the best shows and movies ever made. (One of my favorites being Ted Lasso on Apple TV+.)

But, these services are competing with free distribution platforms that have no barrier to entry such as Youtube, Tiktok and others.

You win some, you lose some. Interesting stuff.

 What I’ve learned about the industry:

I’ve been working in media and entertainment for about 7 years now.

When I was a teenager, I would dream of one day going to Hollywood. I wanted to “make it” by working on high budget movie productions alongside big names and major studios.

That dream of mine is still present. But the older I got the more I realized how tremendously difficult it is to break into this industry.

The new state of entertainment allows the everyday person from anywhere in the world to create and publish without the need for someone to give permission to do so.

As a Canadian myself, packing my bags and going to Hollywood is very difficult to do because of Visa issues, and other international restrictions for non-US workers.

Today, I don’t have to worry about that anymore. I can focus on working from anywhere I want while connecting with people from the entertainment industries through Youtube, Tiktok, and other online platforms.

Everyone creates content and art nowadays because of how easy it is to do so. The low-barrier of entry we have today lends a voice to everyone in the world willing to say something. That’s a powerful and wonderful thing, and I am here for it.

I love cinema and I can’t wait to make something for the big screen one day. But, I appreciate and love the creator industry a lot and I see space for both to coexist.
