chairman of the brewery, but was best known for his association with the Habs.

1909-17. One of the four founder members of the National Hockey League in 1917.
Owned by Molson Breweries. When the NHL
introduced divisions in 1926-27 they were placed in the Canadian
Division where they stayed until the 1938-39 season when the NHL reduced to a single
division. When the NHL re-introduced divisions in 1967-68 Montreal were placed in the East Division. When the conference/division structure was
introduced in 1974-75 they moved into the Norris Division
of the Prince of Wales Conference which they won every season
until 1980-81. In the 1981-82 Montreal moved to the Adams
Division of the Prince of Wales Conference. When the structure was changed again in
1993-94 Montreal were placed in the Northeast Division
of the Eastern Conference. Their original home
ice, the Montreal Arena, was destroyed by fire - for the

- The first set of official hockey rules written in 1877, they were a
modification on Halifax Rules and became
the basis for the rules of the modern game. Halifax Rules, which had never
been officially printed, allowed forward passing and Montreal Rules did not.
Here are some of the rules :
- teams have seven players
- the rink must be at least 112 feet x 58 feet
- there were two 30 minute periods with a ten minute break but if the game
was tied after the hour, there would be sudden death overtime ... unless the
Captains agreed otherwise before the game
- teams changed ends every 30 minutes
- players could only be replaced due to injury
- goalies had to stand at all times
- no part of the hockey stick can be wider than 3 inches
