4 - 18 September 2006 ]
Artistic Director and Leader of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Richard Tognetti, has been given the University of Melbourne’s 2006 Bernard Heinze Award in recognition of his contribution to Australian music.
One of Australia’s most eminent musicians, Richard Tognetti is principally a violinist, but also performs on period, modern and electric instruments.
His numerous arrangements, compositions and transcriptions have expanded the chamber orchestra repertoire and have been performed throughout the world.
Richard Tognetti holds honorary doctorates from three Australian universities and was made a National Living Treasure in 1999. He performs on a 1759 JB Guadagnini violin, lent to him on a semi-permanent basis by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
The Bernard Heinze Award is made by the University of Melbourne each year to recognise outstanding contribution to music in Australia. It honours the memory of Sir Bernard Heinze (1894–1982), who was for 31 years Ormond Professor of Music at the University of Melbourne, and one of the major pioneers of orchestral musical life in Australia.
Former recipients include conductor Richard Divall, composer Graeme Koehne, pianist Stephen McIntyre, singer Yvonne Kenny, composer Peter Sculthorpe, conductor John Hopkins and music educator Sir Frank Callaway.
