Archbold Biological Station is an independent research facility, devoted to long-term ecological research, education and conservation. The Station, founded in 1941, is the primary division of Archbold Expeditions, a non-profit organization founded by Richard Archbold. Archbold Biological Station protects a 5,193-acre globally significant natural preserve located on the southern end of the Lake Wales Ridge, an ancient sandy ridge in south-central Florida. Other divisions are the Archbold Reserve (3,648 acres) adjacent to the Station, and the MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center (10,500 acres) at Buck Island Ranch.
