Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World Hardcover – Jan. 5 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship. In short, deep work is like a super power in our increasingly competitive twenty-first century economy. And yet, most people have lost the ability to go deep-spending their days instead in a frantic blur of e-mail and social media, not even realizing there's a better way.
In DEEP WORK, author and professor Cal Newport flips the narrative on impact in a connected age. Instead of arguing distraction is bad, he instead celebrates the power of its opposite. Dividing this book into two parts, he first makes the case that in almost any profession, cultivating a deep work ethic will produce massive benefits. He then presents a rigorous training regimen, presented as a series of four "rules," for transforming your mind and habits to support this skill.
A mix of cultural criticism and actionable advice, DEEP WORK takes the reader on a journey through memorable stories -- from Carl Jung building a stone tower in the woods to focus his mind, to a social media pioneer buying a round-trip business class ticket to Tokyo to write a book free from distraction in the air -- and no-nonsense advice, such as the claim that most serious professionals should quit social media and that you should practice being bored. DEEP WORK is an indispensable guide to anyone seeking focused success in a distracted world.

Review
"DEEP WORK accomplishes two considerable tasks: One is putting out a wealth of concrete practices for the ambitious, without relying on gauzy clichés. The second is that Mr. Newport resists the corporate groupthink of constant connectivity without seeming like a curmudgeon."―Wall Street Journal
"As automation and outsourcing reshape the workplace, what new skill do we need? The ability to do deep work. Cal Newport's exciting new book is an introduction and guide to the kind of intense concentration in a distraction-free environment that results in fast, powerful learning and performance. Think of it as calisthenics for your mind-and start your exercise program today."―Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and When
"DEEP WORK makes a compelling case for cultivating intense focus, and offers immediately actionable steps for infusing more of it into our lives."―Adam M. Grant, author of Originals and Think Again
"Cal Newport is a clear voice in a sea of noise, bringing science and passion in equal measure. We don't need more clicks, more cats, and more emojis. We need brave work, work that happens when we refuse to avert our eyes."―Seth Godin, author of This is Marketing and The Practice
"Cal Newport offers the most well-informed and astute collection of practical advice I have seen for reclaiming one's mental powers."―Matthew B. Crawford, author of The World Beyond Your Head and Why We Drive
"Just when you think you already know this stuff, DEEP WORK hits you with surprisingly unique and useful insights. Rule #3 alone, with its discussion of the 'Any-Benefit' mind-set, is worth the price of this book."―Derek Sivers, founder, Sivers.org
"Here lies a playbook for professionals of all stripes to achieve true differentiation in a crowded talent marketplace. Cal Newport's latest shows why he is one of the most provocative thinkers on the future of work."―Ben Casnocha, co-author of The Start-Up Of You
"Deep work is the killer app of the knowledge economy: it is only by concentrating intensely that you can master a difficult discipline or solve a demanding problem."―The Economist
"This is a deep, not shallow, book which can enrich your life."―The Globe and Mail
"In this strong self-help book, Newport declares that the habits of modern professionals-checking email at all hours, rushing from meeting to meeting, and valuing multitasking above all else-only stand in the way of truly valuable work."―Publisher's Weekly
"[A] worthwhile distraction."―ValueWalk
"A wonderfully entangled, intertwined, and erudite series of strategies, philosophies, disciplines, and techniques to sharpen your focus and dive deep into your work."―800-CEO-READ
"DEEP WORK is now one of my all-time favorite books, and I'm not joking when I say it was a life-changing read for me. I think it can be for you too."―Brett McKay, author of The Art of Manliness
"What emerges most powerfully is the sense that it's wrong to think of deep work as one more thing you've got to try to cram into your schedule. Truly committing to it, Newport suggests, transforms the rest of your time - so you'll crank through shallow work faster, be more present in your home life, and eliminate time wasted switching between tasks. Depth, in short, isn't at odds with a full life - it facilitates it. I'm persuaded."―Oliver Burkeman, The Guardian

Essential Reading in an Age of Distraction
Reviewed in Canada on August 19, 2025Deep Work is one of those books that doesn’t just make you think differently—it makes you act differently.
Cal Newport offers a powerful argument: the ability to focus without distraction is becoming increasingly rare and therefore incredibly valuable. This book isn’t just about being productive; it’s about reclaiming your attention, your time, and your ability to do work that actually matters.
What I admire about Newport is that he doesn’t shame readers. He acknowledges that phones, messaging, and distractions are part of modern life—but he offers thoughtful, doable strategies to minimize their control over us. From blocking notifications to carving out quiet time for thinking, his advice is grounded and practical. He walks the walk.
While he offers suggestions on how to create a space for you too to do deep work, he says we all need to find what works for us. For me it's having time for activity for thinking, it's putting my phone away, it's closing my email. It's amazing what you can get done when your brain is focused intently on one thing. And then you move to the next because it took you less time than you thought to get through what you are working on.
What struck me most is how relevant this book is for athletes—especially young ones trying to balance school and sport. Learning to focus deeply can be a game-changer not just in academics, but in training and recovery too. And for the adults leading them? We can set a better example by committing to do more deep work ourselves.
In a world where we reach for our phones to pass time, Deep Work reminds us how satisfying it is to actually complete something. A must-read for anyone craving clarity, focus, and fulfillment.

Practical and Inspiring
Reviewed in Canada on January 27, 2025This book really encapsulates what Cal Newport is known for. I listen to his podcast "Deep Questions" and over and over again he comes back to the material from this book. Newport's writing is engaging as it is filled with very helpful anecdotes to illustrate his main arguments. He writes in a way that leaves me inspirited to develop deep work and deep life habits. If you want to learn how to cut out distractions and live a more focused life, this is the book for you!

Shut Down Your Email and Get to Work
Reviewed in Canada on January 16, 2016The first thing I wanted to do after reading this book... was read it again.
Newport touched a nerve with an issue I haven't been able to name, or put my finger on, but has been bugging me for years now. It's a call to put aside the onslaught of shallow work and make room for a skill that we're quickly losing: intense focus.
While it may be difficult to give up the constant distraction of social media, or the obsessive checking of incoming email, Newport opens the curtain on why you should consider it. "We no longer see Internet tools as as products released by for-profit companies, funded by investors hoping to make a return, and run by twentysomethings who are often making things up as they go along."
Having been a fan of his work for years, and seeing the benefits firsthand in my own life, I left this book with a renewed vigor to reshape the way I approach each day. While Newport provides a helpful process to develop a skill he's coined as "deep focus," it is by no means a rigid system - nor an easy task. However, when you take a close look at the world around you, including your own workplace, you begin to see why the effort is worth it.
There are many books I've finished and put away without ever giving them a second thought. This is one of the rare few that still has me thinking and working to take action.

Motivating, worthwhile read—a bit light on substance.
Reviewed in Canada on August 25, 2016This book is a worthwhile read, though despite its name it is a pretty light read too. Don't expect much data behind many of the points being made—his points are often backed up by general things he read in other books, by anecdotes—e.g., be like this blacksmith, or don't use Twitter because Malcolm Gladwell doesn't (he does)—or not backed up at all. It still seems like the author's fleshing out this idea.
But, all that being said, there's some good stuff in there and I found it a good motivation to a) pare down on distractions while doing meaningful tasks (not just working), 2) be aware of the effect (as it happens) of a simple distraction to my productivity, and 3) realize that productivity gains through focus is a bit of an "all-or-nothing" approach. The real gains come with a real commitment to focus.

Life changing
Reviewed in Canada on March 11, 2023This is one of the most useful books I have read in a long time. I couldn’t put it down. I can’t believe how productive I am now, I’m a new kind of tired at the end of the day and I am getting so much done both at work and home. I can’t wait to see how much I improve as I further develop my skills of deep work

J95 out of 5 starsCreate a meaningful difference in your work
Reviewed in Australia on August 10, 2021This is a well-considered, balanced and persuasive book with many insights. While the author is in the sciences, I recommend this book to anyone in the arts who is looking to nurture their creativity and production. This book provides a foundational concept for people who want to build a body of work that creates a meaningful difference.
The idea is that we do our best (deep) work when we have the habits and conditions that support, encourage and build that capacity. It is not for everybody. If you want 'hacks' or shortcuts, this is not the book for you. This book goes beyond the "hustle and grind" approach of putting in time and effort - it presupposes that you're willing to do both of those things. It asks – what will differentiate you then? That is the core goal this book will help you with - to sustain creating and producing work that is the best quality you're capable of (or even better than you've been capable of in the past).
Newport spends the first half of the book providing the research and context to back up the argument that deep, focussed work is what will generate these breakthroughs. The second half of the book steps through the how. Each of the four rules is given with guidance and ideas for implementation that refers to the examples and context given in the first half of the book. This book is not for everybody, that's okay, just consider your needs, your work/art. If you need time to think or plan or create before you do what you do, this book is aimed at you.
I'm grateful to Cal Newport for this book. There are things I have already been able to use as I have made this first read through, and other aspects that will take me longer to try, and test for my own needs. It was absolutely worth reading.
