There’s a different kind of motivation in seeing your name in the git log of the framework that introduced you to programming. My journey with Django Software Foundation started in November 2025, when I began digging into the codebase and landed my first contribution. Things took an exciting turn in February 2026, when I received an unexpected email - "I had been selected for Djangonaut Space 2026🚀 ". The program has been an incredible experience, but the best part was definitely the community. I’ve learned so much about the value of collaboration and teamwork in open source. A huge thank you to our Captain, Eddy Adegnandjou for all his advice, and our Navigator, Eliana Rosselli for her guidance, efforts, and for making the open source so rewarding. I already miss our weekly check-ins. What a great community Django Software Foundation has! On the technical side, I’m excited to share that I have 9 merged Pull Requests and 4 open PRs in the Django ecosystem. A massive thanks to Jacob Walls and other Djangonauts for their thorough reviews and guidance throughout this process, the feedback has been a significant part of my learning as a developer. These contributions have taught me so much about contributing to code at scale. Django has given so much to me, and it feels good to finally give back a bit. 💜 PS: I am open to new opportunities! If you’re looking for a backend engineer with a deep love for Python and DevOps, let’s connect.

Django Software Foundation got into Google Summer of Code 2026 as well with 4 super cool projects. Always feels good to see Django continue its GSoC journey. Programs like GSoC genuinely help open source projects grow faster, not just because “more code gets written”, but because new people enter the community, learn how the project works, ask fresh questions, improve documentation, fix small rough edges, and sometimes stay around for years. That is the real win. This year, DSF received 203 proposals. That sounds exciting, and it is, but honestly, a large number of them were clearly AI-generated or spam proposals. And that makes the review process much harder for us. So if you are applying to programs like GSoC: please do not submit a generic AI-written proposal. Use AI to learn, brainstorm, or improve clarity if you want, but the understanding has to be yours. Once you have the understanding, then write the proposal in your own original way. In a way that AI cannot. Open source is built on trust, effort, and curiosity. The best proposals usually make that very visible. Excited for this year’s projects and looking forward to seeing new contributors join the Django community 💚 Huge thanks to all mentors, reviewers, and everyone helping make this possible. More details coming soon.

I’m grateful to reflect on a journey that started last year during my attachment at Swahilipot Hub Foundation, where I was mentored by Chris Achinga and introduced to Django. This past Friday, I had the opportunity to give back as a coach through Django Mombasa which was hosted at Pure Pearl Foundation. During the session, we covered the basics of Python and Django, explored how the web works including browsers and built a simple website using Django. We also introduced version control using Git and GitHub. Thank you to Chris Achinga, Lenapunya Sanaipei, Jesse Amiandah, Zablon Zambagarrah, and Naila Abdulhakim Said for organizing such an impactful event. Looking forward to watching this community continue to grow. #Django #WebDevelopment #TechCommunity #DjangoGirls #MombasaTech
