Denis Afonso liked thisDenis Afonso liked thisA moment worth sharing this week. Last year, my husband made a big career change at 39, stepping into a completely new path with An Garda Síochána. On Friday, he was one of 193 new Gardaí attested- a proud milestone after a lot of hard work. It wasn’t the easiest decision, but it’s one he felt strongly about- and he went all in, even surprising himself with how much he excelled after more than 20 years away from the books. A reminder that backing yourself- even later in your career- is something worth celebrating!✨👏🏼

Denis Afonso reacted on thisDenis Afonso reacted on thisToday I submitted my dissertation for my MSc in Computer Science & AI at Northumbria University 🎓 It’s been a 2.5-year journey, and honestly, regardless of the final grade, I’m really proud to have made it this far. During this time, we also welcomed a new baby into the family... which definitely made things more challenging, but also even more meaningful. For my dissertation, I focused on applying Computer Vision to amateur football, specifically around action detection. Over the last 9 months, I experimented with different approaches and models like CALF and T-DEED, and explored transfer learning strategies to improve performance with limited data. A lot of it was hands-on ... testing ideas, building pipelines, tweaking hyperparameters, testing optimisers, and seeing what actually works in practice. It was a great way to bring together things I enjoy ... math, tech, and football, and to better understand how these AI systems behave outside of theory. Closing this chapter with a strong sense of accomplishment and looking forward to what’s next.

Denis Afonso reacted on thisDenis Afonso reacted on thisAfter an incredible 2 and a half-year run, today is my last day at GitLab 🦊. I joined to help build out some of the best infrastructure and platform engineering teams in the industry, and somehow along the way, I also became a much better recruiter. Funny how that works. Grateful to the leadership that trusted me to do meaningful work, and to a TA team that made the day-to-day genuinely fun and kept me sane. I also can't forget hiring teams I partnered with and some of the incredible talent I hired, you all made me look really good at my job 🫡 . Now I'm going to take a week off to hopefully decompress (I have a 3 and 5-year-old, so that won't happen 😅 ) before starting a new chapter that I am so excited about, I could scream 💚.
