The real challenges, the ones that are satisfying to solve, are the ones that are considering real constraints and a team that had to agree on real compromises. Seeing this play out and see real users interact with what you've built is what really motivates designers, teams and stakeholders. Release stuff. Make real compromises. Not everything has to be perfect. Design-work that lives only in discoveries and vision pieces without real impact starts to fade away fast.

If you're not at least trying to locate hiring managers for certain roles on here, you're leaving a lot on the table. I always try to connect with a Director of Product Design or Product Design Manager after applying to a role. Best-case scenario, they are the hiring manager, or know who it is. Worst case, they ghost you, but at least you tried.

If you're a non-technical designer, here are some of the skills I already had (and would recommend learning) that I've found to be helpful for getting good results building small websites and live prototypes with Codex: - Have some understanding of html and css - Be familiar with Chrome dev tools, and specifically the inspect tool - Some knowledge of git and github basics - How to deploy things with Vercel or Netlify - A belief that you can solve the problems you encounter and the tenacity to do so.

Product designers who consistently land roles at great startups have one thing in common. They show up prepared, even when they think the job is already theirs. The small stuff is what hiring managers talk about after the call ends. Don't leave it on the table. What that looks like in practice: - Spend real time with the product before the call. Use it. Form an opinion. Come in with a take. Founders notice immediately when someone has genuinely engaged versus skimmed the about page the night before - Know your work cold. Not just what you built, but why you made the calls you made. Vague answers read as a lack of ownership, even when that's not the intention - Don't hide the gaps. If you're missing experience the role asks for, name it, then explain why this is exactly the problem you want to be working on next. Founders respect that far more than a polished answer that doesn't quite fit - If you're genuinely excited, show it. Ask real questions. Bring something up that isn't on the brief.
