2.1 Notes

The document discusses conditional statements, their converses, and biconditionals. It defines key terms like hypothesis, conclusion, converse, and biconditional. Examples are provided of writing out conditional statements, their converses, and biconditionals in symbolic form as well as determining the truth of statements and their converses.

• A conditional statement is a statement that
can be written “If _____, then _____.”
1. If I live in Palo Alto, then I live in California.
• I live in Palo Alto is called the hypothesis
• I live in California is called the conclusion
Symbolically
• p (hypothesis): I live in Palo Alto
• q (conclusion): I live in California
• If p, then q
• p --> q
• p implies q
• p only if q
• q if p
Converses
• The converse of a conditional is formed by
switching the hypothesis and conclusion
2. Statement: If I have no hair, then I am bald.
Converse: If I am bald, then I have no hair.
3. Write the converse: If x2 = 36, then x < 8. Is
the converse true?
A conditional statement is false if an example
exists such that the hypothesis is true but the
conclusion is false.
Biconditionals
• A biconditional is a statement that combines
a conditional and its converse.
• p if and only if q
• p iff q
4. Write as a biconditional: If an angle is a
straight angle, then the angle is 180. If an
angle is 180, then the angle is a straight
angle.
5. Write the biconditional as two if-then
statements: Segments are congruent iff their
lengths are equal.
Give the converse of each statement.
Determine if the statement/converse is
true. If false, give a counterexample.
1.If points are coplanar, then they lie in the
same plane.
2.If m<x = 110, then <x is obtuse.
3.If 2 angles are right angles, then they are
congruent.
4.If a number is divisible by 2, then it is divisible
by 4.
5.Write as two conditional statements: DE=FG
iff DE ≅ 
