2009 National Merit Timeline

Students were notified confidentially on September 4th that they were National Merit Semifinalists. Between September 11th-18th, they had to return permission forms and complete semifinalist packets. On September 16th, semifinalists would be announced locally and nationally in newspapers. To be eligible for National Merit Scholarships, semifinalists must take the SAT between October 2007 and December 2009, sending scores to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. There are three types of National Merit Scholarships - National Merit, Corporate-Sponsored, and College-Sponsored, but semifinalists can only be awarded one.

2009 National Merit Semifinalist Timeline

Fri. Sept 4: announcement made confidentially to students

Fri. Sept. 11: students return teacher lists and parent permission forms

Wed. Sept. 16: semifinalists announced locally and nationally; Journal-World and Free
Press take pictures—will notify students of exact time and place.

Fri. Sept. 18: Students turn in completed semifinalist packets

Important to keep in mind:

Students MUST take the SAT sometime between October 2007 and December
2009.
Scores MUST be sent to NMSC. If you have already taken the test, scores must
be sent as soon as possible.

There are three different types of National Merit Scholarships:


--National Merit (everyone is considered)
--Corporate-Sponsored (must meet a company’s criteria)
--College-Sponsored (must attend a sponsoring college or university, and
must have selected this college before May 31)
Note: cannot change your college choice after first round of scholarships
have been sent to colleges April 28, but can remain “undecided” until May
31.

Semifinalists are only eligible for one of these scholarships.
