Job description
A site engineer oers advice in the planning, co-
ordination and supervision of technical aspects of
construction projects. A site engineers role is vital to a
construction project: they have a number of
responsibilities including solving technical issues,
providing advice, management and preparing reports.
Work activities
Managing construction projects.
Ensuring equipment and procedures comply with safety
regulations.
Overseeing building work.
Surveying sites.
Making sure budgets, timescales and project
specifcations are met.
Solving problems and providing technical advice.
Checking and preparing site reports, designs and
drawings.
Liaising with other engineers, surveyors, clients and
sub-contractors.
Work conditions
Travel: visiting sites and clients is integral to the job.
Location: A number of large construction companies are
based in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland;
some oer opportunities to work on projects overseas.
Typical employers
Civil engineering companies.
Building companies and contractors.
Public sector organisations.
Entry requirements and training
Most site engineers have at least a primary degree in a
relevant subject such as construction, building or
civil/structural engineering. Experience of the working
environment and management are benefcial. To become
a chartered engineer a degree accredited by Engineers
Ireland as well as work experience is required.
