Genting Highlands is an integrated resort development comprising hotels,
casinos and a theme park in Pahang, perched on the peak of Gunung Ulu Kali at
1,800 meters high. Nestled near the border of Selangor within an hour's drive
from Kuala Lumpur (about 35km), Genting Resort presents a popular weekend
getaway from the city heat, conveniently connected by the Karak Highway and
major trunk roads, along with a cable car service from the satellite town of

Since 1971, Genting Highlands has remained the only legal gambling outfit in

the First World Plaza is a colourful shopping center with a collection of family

History
Genting Highlands was founded by Lim Goh Tong, who arrived at the shores of
Malaysia from Fujian, in 1937. Born in 1918, Lim was a young man, only a lowly
carpenter while he picked up the local Malay language. For the next few years,
he dabbled in vegetable farming and petty trading, but eventually involved
himself in the scrap metal and heavy machinery business. It was through this
industry that Lim finally made it rich. The end of World War II signalled rapid
development in Malaysia, fueling the demand for Lim's stock of second hand
equipment for tin mining and rubber plantations. From there, he ventured into
iron mining and then, construction.
One day, while having a meal in the Cameron Highlands, it struck upon Lim the
idea of a highland resort near Kuala Lumpur. The nearest hill station then,
Cameron Highlands, was about 200 km away from KL, which made it less than a
convenient journey for a quick highland holiday. He scouted the highlands within
the vicinity of Kuala Lumpur, and found an ideal spot on the peak of Gunung Ulu
Kali, one of the highest mountains on the Pahang-Selangor border. After studying
its topography and mapping out its development, Lim pooled all his resources
and energy into creating a highland resort with accessible roads, proper
infrastructure, clean water and supply of electricity.
In the middle of 1971, Genting Highlands opened for business, Prime Minister of
Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman having granted him the first and only casino
license in the country. Over the next 30 years, Genting Highlands continued to
grow from a simple resort with a small casino to a modern holiday destination,
with theme parks, numerous hotels, large roads and a cable car system. Today,
Genting Highlands is one of the most popular highland tourist destinations in
Malaysia, attracting visitors from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and all over the world.
It is still the only legal gambling den in Malaysia, having several world class
casinos, which can be attributed to its immense popularity with locals.
Best Time to Go and Weather
Genting Highlands has a cooling climate between 20C to 25C during the day
and 15C to 20C during the night. Misty weather is a prevalent element and
thunder storms are frequent towards the year end. However, you can visit
Genting Highlands anytime, as the roads up are made of sturdy construction that
resist most landslides. If you prefer a dry holiday, the best time to come here
would lie between March and September when the rainfall is generally least. Be
sure to wear some thick clothing at night if you're susceptible to cold. The mist
around the peak can obscure panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur city and the
landscape below, so the best time for a view is usually the early morning or late
evenings. Finally, low peak seasons are the best time for cheaper
accommodation rates and smaller crowds.

Resorts, Accommodation
Accommodation at Genting Highlands, despite its
popularity, is limited due to the nature of its ownership,
which runs a monopoly on all hotels at the peak while
exerting influence on any third party resort development
at the area, including Gohtong Jaya. Hence, luxury hotels
are restricted to Maxims Genting, Resort Hotel, Highlands
Hotel and Awana Resort, but Genting Resort also offers
First World Hotel and Theme Park Hotel for budgetoriented accommodation. Alternatives to Genting Resort
can be found at Gohtong Jaya - all budget
accommodation, such as Hotel Seri Malaysia, Genting
Permai Resort and Genting View Resort, the last two
being family apartment units with clubhouse facilities that
include swimming pools, tennis courts and conference
halls.
Theme Park
The outdoor theme park is Genting Highland's largest family attraction, offering recreational activities and
amusement rides in a cooling environment high up the mountain slopes. Visitors can explore over 50 types of
rides, including roller coasters, ferris wheels, swings, carousels, trains, cars and ships that tumble through the air,
barrel down water channels or crawl slowly along a steel track. Boating, archery and go-karts are more activity
choices, while mini concerts and performances by clowns and mascots provide crowd entertainment on holiday
weekends. On most days, the Genting Theme Park is easily the liveliest spot on the peak, next to the casinos.
Thrill rides are designed for adults with minimum height and age requirements, along with safety belts
and harnesses, to prevent early or unwanted deaths. These most popular of these rides include the
Spinner, Space Shot, Flying Dragon, Corkscrew and Flying Coaster, all designed to maximise
excitement through wild motion and crazy speeds. Family rides are much slower and emphasize more
on sightseeing aspectes; these are catered for children and parents to sit together and enjoy the fun.
Some examples include the Astrofighter, Monorail, Pirate Train and Tea Cup. Then there's Beryl's
Chocolate Wonderland, a cheesy imitation of Willy Wonka's original factory with shopping racks full of
chocolates for visitors to purchase and gorge.
At the lake, visitors can ride around on paddle boats, soaking in a view of the colourful surroundings. Several
playpens around the amusement park, including a day center for kids, is where parents can leave small children
to occupy themselves. Another activity for children is the Rainforest Splash Pool, an indoor heated water park
that faces the Sungai Rejang Flume Ride and wave pool. There is also an indoor section of the theme park
housed in the First World Plaza, which offer a smaller and much milder range of rides. Open daily from 10am to
7pm, the Genting Theme Park opens earlier at 8am and closes as late as 10pm on weekends and public

From Genting Highlands, several places of interest lie in the outskirts along Karak Highway. Janda Baik is a lush
nature valley lined with traditional villages and eco resorts, a popular getaway for the weekend among families
and even team building retreats. Ulu Yam is a small town along one of the trunk routes to Genting from Rawang,
which is famous for its 'Loh Mee', a type of noodle dish from Chinese cuisine. Similarly, Gohtong Jaya is a
satellite town 5km before the peak that's famous for its Chinese eateries. Finally, there's Berjaya Hills Resort at
Bukit Tinggi, a countryside escape among the hills not far away along the Karak Highway
