Assalamualaikum and a very good morning to Sir/Madam Chairman, honourable judges, teachers and
my dear audiences. I am Sahilah Ain binti Sathakathulla from Opposition team and this house
believes that school uniforms should not be abolished.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Before I proceed, let me state to you the definition of school uniform. According to
Wikipedia, school uniform is an outfit—a set of standardized clothes—worn primarily for an
educational institution. They are common in primary and secondary schools in various
countries. When used, they form the basis of a school's dress code. Traditionally school
uniforms have been largely subdued and professional. Many believe that uniforms cut down
on individuality. Boys' uniforms often consist of dark short or long trousers and light-
colored shirt, often with a tie. Girls' uniforms vary greatly between countries and schooling
systems, but typically consist of a dress or a blouse worn either with a skirt or culottes or
under a pinafore; some countries allow girls to wear trousers. The use of a blazer or suit-
like jacket for either gender is also fairly common, especially in countries with relatively cold
weather. In some countries, such as Japan, school uniform is essentially standard in all
schools using it, but in others, such as Great Britain, each school has an individual uniform,
varying in colour and often making use of badges.
Dear listeners,
Some people think that school uniforms should be abolished. But we, the Opposition disagree with
the fact. My first point is, school uniform provides us with the powerful sense of unity. When students
are not wearing school uniforms, they are obviously wearing their home clothes. They may or would
claim that their home clothes are more comfortable then school uniforms. However, not all
students are as fortunate as others. Those who can afford more expensive clothing will almost
certainly mock those who are not as rich as themselves. This will cause much discrimination
against the less fortunate of students and will cause tension between the two groups. But if
everyone is wearing the same thing, all students will be instilled with a sense of unity with
one another.
My second point is school uniforms would make the school more secure. Should all the
students wear their own clothes, it would be much easier for an outsider, a terrorist for
instance to enter the school. Nowadays, terrorist groups have been recruiting younger people
due to the fact that they are not treated like a treat unlike the adults. Bearing this in mind, if
the whole school wore different clothes, sneaking into the school compound would be
incredibly easy for a terrorist to enter. Even though the guards are effective and all but they
could not possibly check every student that is entering the school compound. Wearing
uniforms would dramatically reduce the school's security risks. The guards would not need to
check all the students if school uniforms were worn.
My dear audiences,
My final point is the issue of restraint. People are psychologically affected by what they
wear and see. Wow! Should school uniforms be abolished, most students will probably be
sensible enough not to dress proactively. However there will always be a handful of irrational
an unintelligent students who will. If a student was stupid enough to walk out in society like a
gangster, you can count on it that a fight would erupt. The consequences of these fights
would be an increased amount of casualties and let me assure you, no sane person wants to
get injured or even killed. Uniforms would cause us to gain more self-control. Not many
student would willingly assault somebody if they wore a uniform. With our names and the
schools logo on the uniforms, most students would agree that getting into a fight would bring
them trouble. Wearing uniforms would help the students and society to be on more peaceful
terms.
However, I must admit that wearing uniforms wastes students' time due to the constant attire
checks. Both students and teachers will be very annoyed with the attire checks. Also,
uniforms are unarguably not at the height of fashion. Even I have to admit that school
uniforms do not look very well. Finally, uniforms do happen to cost money. These problems,
however can be solved easily or will be amplified by wearing different clothes. For instance
the attire checks. While they are time consuming, they are mandatory for all students to look
proper. There isn't really a need to look fabulous in school. School's a place for studying, not
a fashion show. Don't you agree? All this shows that abolishing school uniforms will prove
useless.
Finally, I come to a conclusion of this essay. Wearing school uniform gives the students a
variety of benefits, the most prominent being the sense of unity instilled in the students who
wear school uniforms, the security benefits the bestow upon the school and the sense of self-
restraint. The abolishing of school uniforms will not help. In my opinion, school uniforms
should not be abolished.
Thank you.
