InHIRISE buildings.Section403.10.1orthe2006 InternationalBuildingCodeandSection604.2.15.1or the2006InternationalFireCorerequire: Systemsupervisionwithmanualstartandtransfer featureshallbeprovidedatthefirecommand center.

Location
TheEPSshallbelocatedinaseparateroomforLevelI installation(7.2.1). Theroomshallhaveaminimum2hourrating. Outsideenclosures(should)mustprotectfromsnow, rain,andwind(7.2.1.1). TheEPSshallhaveaminimumclearanceof3feeton allsidesofinspection,maintenance,repairs,etc. (7.2.5)

BatteryLighting
TheLevelI&LevelIIEPSequipmentlocation(s)shall beprovidedwithbatterypoweredemergency lighting. Doesnotapplyunitsoutdoors. Thisincludestheareahousingthetransferswitch (7.3.1).

FuelSupply
DieselFuel Mostgeneratorsusedieselas afuelsupply. Fueltanksmustbesized accordingtothespecificEPS class(7.9.1). Limitedto660gallonsif insideabuilding(7.9.1) InCobbCountythe generatortankmustbe permittedseparatelyform thegeneratoritself.(AHJ) Thetankmustmeet requirementsofNFPA30 andNFPA37. NaturalGas Somegeneratorsusenatural gas. Supplyforthegenerator mustbeonthesupplysideof themaingasshutoffforthe building(7.9.7) This usuallyrequiresaseparate meter. Theshutoffforthegenerator gassupplyshallbemarked asssuchandthemaingas shutoffneedtoindicatethe existenceoftheseparated shutofffortheEPS(7.9.8).

AcceptanceTest
Anonsiteacceptancetestshallbeconductedasa finalapprovaltestforallEPSS. TheAHJshallbegivenadvancenoticeofthe acceptancetestinordertowitnessthetest(7.13.3).

8.2.1* Atleast twosetsof instruction manualsfor allmajor components oftheEPSS shallbe supplied

MaintenanceRequirements ATS
Transferswitchesshallbesubjectedtoamaintenance andtestingprogramthatincludesthefollowing: Monthlytestingandoperation Annually Checkingofconnections Inspectionortestingforevidenceofoverheatingand excessivecontacterosion Removalofdustanddirt. Replacementofcontactswhenrequired(8.3.5)

MaintenanceRequirements Testing
EPSS,Includingallappurtenantcomponents,shallbe inspectedWEEKLYandexercisedunderload MONTHLY(8.4.1). Alogshouldbekeptoftheweeklyandmonthly checks/exercises. Samplemaintenancelogsareavailableinthecontents oftheNFPA110documents. RoutineMaintenanceprogramshallbeoverseenbya properlyinstructedindividual(8.4.5).

MaintenanceRequirements MonthlyTesting
Section8.4.2)Dieselgeneratorsetsinserviceshallbe exercisedatleastoncemonthly,foraminimumof30 minutes,usingoneofthefollowingmethods. 1) Loadingthatmaintainstheminimumexhaustgas temperaturesasrecommendedbythemanufacturer. 2)Underoperatingtemperatureconditionsandatnot lessthat30percentoftheEPSnameplatekWrating. 3) Iftheenginecannotbeoperateduntilthewater temperatureandtheoilpressurehavestabilizedand thenthetestshallbeterminatedbeforethe30minute timeperiodexpires.

MaintenanceRequirements AnnualLoadBankTesting
Section8.4.2.3DieselpoweredEPSinstallationthat donotmeettherequirementsof8.4.2shallbe exercisedmonthlywiththeavailableEPSSloadand exercisedannuallywithsupplementalloadsat 25%ofnameplateratingfor30minutes,followedby 50%ofnameplatefor30minutesfollowedby 75%ofnameplatefor60minutes, foratotalof2 continuoushours.

MaintenanceRequirement36 MonthLoadBankTesting
Section8.4.9Level1 EPSSshallbetestedforthe durationofitsasassignedclass(seeSection4.2),for atleast4hours,atleastoncewithinevery36months. Section8.4.9.1TheloadshallbetheEPSSsystemload runningattheofthetest.Thetestshallbeinitiated byopeningallswitchesorbreakerssupplyingnormal powertotheEPSS.

MaintenanceRequirements TimeDelays
Loadtestsofgeneratorshallincludecompletecold start(8.4.4). TimeDelaysshouldbesetasfollows: Onstart:1secondminimum Transfertoemergency:nominimum Returntonormal:5minutesminimum Shutdown:5minutesminimum Transferswitchesshallbeoperatedmonthly(8.4.6).

MaintenanceRequirements
SectionA5.6.4.5.1recommendsthatleadacidstarting batteriesbereplacedevery24to30months.

TransferTime
Foranygeneratorservingemergencylighting,the loadmustbepickedupbythegeneratorwithin10 seconds.Seesection7.9.1.2oftheLifeSafetyCode.

FireExtinguisher
AfireExtinguishershouldbekeptincloseproximity tothegeneratorandshouldbeatypeforthehazard. Typicallyaminimum3A,40B,Cextinguisherwithin 30feetofthegeneratorandinthepathofegress.
