Task 7 Questionnaire
Results
As part of my Media Coursework, I had to complete task 7. This meant I had to create my own questionnaire which I could ask a varied group of 25 people which would then mean I had answers I could evaluate and find out all different aspects I need to about my magazine so it would be the best it possibly could. Now I have all my results, I am going to go into depth on each question to explore each section and what will be needed when I am creating my music magazine.
Question 1: Male or Female There was a mix of genders who answered my questionnaire, but there seemed to be a bigger response from females. The accurate split was 10 boys and 15 girls 40% to 60%.
Male 40% Female 60%
Question 2: Age categories I ensured that I had covered a lot of different age ranges because I didnt want to base it around just one category. I had an option for Under 16, 16-19, 20-25 and Over 25. This meant everybody had something they could pick no matter their age. However, as this is a music magazine I am creating in college every single person came back with the same age group: 16-19. This worked out quite well because this is the audience I was hoping to collect all my results from as they are the audience I am targeting my magazine at.
25 Numer of people asked 20 15 10 5 0 Under 16 16-19 20-25 Over 25 Age Group
Question 3: Hip/Hop artists currently listened to? This question allowed people to be open as they didnt have multi-choice. I thought this was a useful because this ensured that they gave the names of the people they think represent the genre the most, and who is most recognisable in the public eye. As well as that, I got a lot a varied amount so I had a lot of different artists to choose from and see who was repeated. Kayne West and Jay Z appeared a lot, as these are hip-hop artists in the charts so they are well known to everybody. However I did get some other answers such as Devlin and P Money who are more unknown and that I can also include in my magazine.
Question 4: Attraction to Hip-Hop/Rap music? On this question I gave people different options so they were not stuck on what to write, and it encouraged them to think deeper into their own opinion. I also added an option to select Other which you could add your own reason so I am able to understand everybodys different points of view. The most popular answer was the lyrics of the songs, closely followed by the image you gain. These are the result I expected.
25 20 Numer of people 15 10 5 0 Song lyrics Instruments and Image gained vocals used from HipHop/Rap Reason Artists and Bands Other
Question 5: Price of a music magazine? Here is where people could give their opinion on what they would actually pay for the music magazine I am creating, and others similar. This helped because I would get the right target audience from this I would know exactly the maximum price I could sell it at and how much demand I could get at the highest price. I expected the average price to be around 2 as people are willing to spend money on something they enjoy but may not have their own income so will have to rely on their guardians money. The results were accurate on my estimate as the dominate choice was 1-2, closely followed by 2-3.
25 20 Number of people 15 10 5 0 Under 1 1-2 2-3 3-4 4-5 Over 5 Price willing to be payed
Question 6: Do you buy/red music magazines? This question was a simple yes or no answer, which you had to circle. It is hard to predict what the answer would be for this as it would vary on the person and their own lifestyle. As the media how it is today I think more people would choose no as they have access to internet for free and can find pretty much all they need from other sources like such. However once picked, you are lead on to follow up questions to explore more detail on your option.
Question 7a: Specific music magazines do you enjoy reading/buying? (follow up of question 6 answer yes) Here I gave no options as I didnt want to make a person opinion change or put answers in their head. I needed to the answer to be honest so it was open to whatever they had to say. This gave me a wide range of genres and magazines, most common being Kerrang, NME and Billboard. I think this suited the age group I was looking at and proved the wide range of audience these music magazines have and supply for.
Question 7b: Why do you enjoy/reading these specific music magazines? (follow up of question 6 answer yes) Again, I left this space completely open for everybodys comments and opinions. This made sure everybody got to say their real feelings on the matter rather than following the path of made answers. I gained a few answers from this, these were: 1. 2. 3. 4. Something to do in spare time Want to be up to date with all music and artists The brands(music magazines) read/bought are well-known Most reliable and up to date source of media for music
These answers cover most peoples basics and they make sense as to why people would spend money, weekly/fortnightly/monthly on these magazines. There is a different range of answers so because of this I will try to aim my magazine for the same quality and provide the same service as the recognized companies do.
Question 8: Why do you not buy/read music magazines? (Follow up on question 6 Answer No) For this I gave answers they could pick from as otherwise some people may have just missed the question out, which is what I do not want as this is vital to attract people to my own music magazine. However I did give an option as other as if people had something more to say they could. This would help as if I find out why they didnt buy music magazines, I could change certain ways and attract them to mine. Most people answered: They dont interest me and Theyre too expensive. This means that people I need to set a reasonable price and make sure the magazine is attractive to customers.
Question 9: What would encourage you to buy a music magazine? Again for this question I gave them options they could choose from to help encourage to answer truthfully. The most picked answer was: Dates of oncoming gigs and Competitions. I feel like this is necessary in a music magazine as the customers would want to be the first to know about any possible live acts and would be the ones willing to spend money on certain music acts. The competitions may also work as people know they may be getting something extra out of it.
Question 10: Which magazine cover is the most appealing to you?
a)
b)
c)
d)
The response on this question was extremely mixed as all the covers are interesting and fit to very different certain types of people. However A was the most popular I feel this was because a lot of different people can relate to it. They artist is representing her own music in an individual way. The other popular attraction was C I feel this is because it is very unusual. Not many people would be able to create a magazine as unique and interesting.
Questions 11/12/13/14 The remaining questions were all based on ratings. They all had specific sections it would focus on to make sure I got the good responses and advice for everything on my magazine. This question worked well because it gave you options and included all the important criterias of a music magazine, which could then further tell me what I need to prioritize on my own. I feel they were good questions to end with as it involved the front cover, contents and double paged spread.
